49ers tight end Eric Johnson signed as an unrestricted free agent with the New Orleans Saints.
"It was an extremely difficult decision," said Johnson, who had been with the 49ers for six seasons and led the 49ers with 82 catches in 2004.

"Coach (Mike) Nolan handled everything with a lot of class," Johnson said. "They expressed interest in me, and kept up with me, but they understood."
Former 49ers Pro Bowl center Jeremy Newberry signed with the Oakland Raiders. Newberry attempted to make a comeback in 2006 after having off-season microfracture surgery on his ailing knee. 49ers offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton was hired by the Chicago Bears as their quarterbacks coach.
