I didnt say he was a bust.

but having a cornerback flame out after 6 years..... = not worth a 1st rounder.

by comparison

Nate Clements was drafted 21sh overall in 2001(Plummer the 24th pick in 2000), 1 year after Plummer.

and is still playing....

Seems the other way around for us, 1-16 have been pretty good slots for us 17-32 not so great. lets take a look

Bad Players in Red, Good Players in Green

Since 2000
2000
1 16 Julian Peterson
1 24 Ahmed Plummer

2001
1 7 Andre Carter

2002
1 27 Mike Rumph

2003
1 26 Kwame Harris

2004
1 31 Rashaun Woods

2005
1 1 Alex Smith

2006
1 6 Vernon Davis
1 22 Manny Lawson (Manny gets a red because he was drafted to be a pass rusher, and cant rush for shit)

2007
1 11 Patrick Willis
1 28 Joe Staley

2008
1 29 Kentwan Balmer

Im leaving out 09 and 10 drafts, not enuff time to judge, but take a look @ that, our drafts are the opposite of what youre saying With Alex Smith and Staley being the 2 exceptions of where they were drafted
How's the 49ers cap space? I really have no idea. I figure, even if you are getting quality picks at 1-17, you're probably overpaying for all those picks and you're not able to pick up good free agents.

I'm not saying the 49ers specifically can't draft. I love Willis and Gore and Crabtree and all those other motherfuckers (besides A. Smith). I just think as a general rule, if my team was the 32nd best team in the league and had a #1 draft pick, I'd be writing a letter to my front office every day saying TRADE DOWN.

Besides, how much did the 49ers pay Rumph, and how much did they pay Alex Smith?

I just checked, Rumph had a 3.2 million dollar signing bonus and a 4 year contract that averaged about $500,000 per year. Alex Smith had a 50 million dollar contract with $24 million guaranteed. I'm not trying to do a lot of math in my head, but it seems like you can get about 10-20 Rumph's for every Alex Smith. If they're both gonna be busts, wouldn't you rather take the guy that cost you like $5 million total?

Comparing Rumph and Smiths #s are like comparing apples and oranges. The $ made rises yearly, and also QBs get more $ than corners.

Our cap space has been fine, i think the past 2-3 years we have had 15-25 mil in cap space lol. I agree for the most part with not wanting to pick #1, unless there is a clear cut prospect that gets cant miss reviews from every and fits your team, wouldnt u want Sam Bradford @ qb if the steelers were hurting? or Suh on your D-line? Shit even if your team had an Elite qb like Brady, Manning, Brees, you should take Bradford, and have him do what Aaron Rodgers did with Favre. Players are gonna get paid regardless by someone, until the whole rookie pay scale shit is fixed. My whole point is the Niners do much better when they have a crack at the 1st 15 players available, it seems after those players are taken, they just pick in the dark
