Coroner's Inquest into Metro shooting of teen murder suspect
A Coroner's Inquest into the death of Swauve Lopez, a 17 year old murder suspect, shot and killed by police, began Friday morning. Seven jurors will decide if the shooting, which took place in May, was justifiable.
It's a standard procedure when ever someone dies at the hands of law enforcement. It has been nearly a month since the shooting. Swauve Lopez was arrested for murdering another teen, Kyle Staheli, whose body was found shot and burned in the desert that same day.
Detectives say Lopez planned the killing and when he was arrested, they found a gun on him.
He was handcuffed but managed to run from officers, that's when he was shot twice in the back by two Metro detectives.
News 3 spoke to Lopez's grandmother. She wants to know why he was shot down and in her words "murdered." She says someone needs to answer for it.
"They killed him, they murdered my grandson for no reason. Why did they have to kill him?"
As part of the inquest, detectives involved in the shooting will have to take the stand. At the end of the investigation, it will be up to a jury to decide if this death was justifiable.
Another teen, James Carter Jr., has been charged with murder for the death of Kyle Staheli.
Prosecutors say he will be tried as an adult.
