An 18-year-old Yuba City man was killed in an apparent exchange of gunfire between passengers in two cars near Bridge Street and Gray Avenue in Yuba City on Sunday night.
Yuba City police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey said details were sketchy as detectives tried to piece together witness reports from two different crime scenes.
"We had reports of shots being heard at Gray and Bridge," Pavey said.
Those initial reports came in about 7:10 PM. As police rolled to the area, officers became aware of a gunshot victim at Morton and Main streets, nearly two miles away and in the opposite direction of area hospitals.
"Apparently he was driven there," Pavey said of the victim, who took one shot to the head, and was pronounced dead at Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville.
His identity was not released Sunday.
Pavey said she was not sure if an officer was flagged down by someone at Morton and Main, or had come across the car with the gunshot victim. She had no information about the driver, or why that person drove to that location.
Pavey said she was not aware of any specific suspects being identified during the early stages of the investigation.
"I know they are working on identify the other vehicle, but I don't know what if any specific suspect information they have gathered," Pavey said.
"We are certainly not ruling out that there was gang involvement in this," Pavey said.
Detective Sgt. Brian Bernardis is heading the investigation.
Pavey did not expect any additional information would be available until later today.
