I feel what you are saying, I go back and forth if I like Mars Volta or ATDI more. I mean it's two totally different types of music. You know it's the same singer from Mars Volta and ATDI right? Cedric, but I guess with ATDI it was more screaming/yelling and maybe a 1/4 at most singing.

I like some of their songs and would still fuck the living shit out of Gwen.

I like all their material, I get what you mean by a more poppy sound (I don't know if I'd say poppy, mainstream sound maybe?) I like all their stuff regardless though, Lullabies to Paralyze was a great album. But I do have to say I don't care for the radio single they have for the new album...

I used to like White Stipes, now not so much. Like I'll like a song when I first hear it, but after a few weeks I can't stand it. The Raconteurs on the other hand are fucking awesome all around.

That was his first solo album. It's pretty dope. He is starting to have a lot of solo work and with others outside of The Mars Volta. If you want any let me know. If you like his guitar work and kind of odd/trippy instrumental music you will more then likely dig the rest of his stuff.
