Sebastião Salgado Retrospective Exhibition: Powerful Images by Brazilian Photographer

Powerful black-and-white images by one of the world's most important photographers are going on show in London. Sebastião Salgado was born in Aimorés, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1944. He abandoned his career as an economist and switched to photography in 1973.

Over the last 40 years, he has travelled the world, from the ship-breaking yards of Bangladesh to the frozen wastelands of the Arctic.

Salgado's most famous, early series was taken in 1986 at the controversial Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil, which employed thousands of workers in appalling, perilous conditions. They were published all over the world, and the vertigo-inducing pictures revealed the scale of the Dante-esque hell endured by the miners.

Salgado's photography uses cinematic composition and high-contrast printing to intensify the drama of his subject matter, leaving the viewer in little doubt as to Salgado's politics, his interest in inequality and his passion for ecology – themes that resonate throughout the exhibition.

Salgado works on personally chosen, long-term projects, taking thousands of images, often over many years. Each series is the result of his total immersion in the subject matter.

This traditional approach to working aligns him with some of history's greatest photojournalists – from Dorothea Lange's four-year project for the USA's Farm Security Administration in the 1930s to Bruce Davidson's two-year sojourn in Harlem's run-down tenement blocks during the 1960s.

He reminds us that the best photography is not usually done to deadlines. What singles Salgado out from his peers is the sheer scale and ambition of the projects.

Beetles+Huxley Gallery in London will host a retrospective exhibition – with more than 40 pictures from Salgado's career – from 8 October to 8 November.

we for sure crossed paths before because my entire family including myself have ALWAYS bought their tires from your Grandfather. For like 30+ years.

Plus I go to Angels Care Collective across the street (used to, they closed about a year back) ...thats where they had the scantily clad dressed bud baristas.

....pretty sure I already told you but I got fam thats lived in patterson since the early 80's when it was just a dust bowl & homes sold for 50k.

im sure we have crossed paths too if you used to get your tires there. Sad to say it closed down 2 months ago. We allways had alot of loyal ass customers that are going to miss us for sure! Its really surprising how many ppl know about our business. Seems like everyone in San Jose has been there or heard about us. Sometimes I get hooked up from ppl when they find out im from The Roman Tire family.

Angel care was ah cool ass place I knew everyone who worked there and their company BBQs were off the hook! We envited them to our BBQs and we went to theres. Good Times! The girls that worked there were fine as fuck too...and they were like crack whores but for weed. Smokem out and they would fuck!

Custom Candy

Some sneaky smugglers tried to get oxycodone pills into a prison by replacing the seeds in the middle with pills. You would hope that no one checks to make sure the seeds are actually seeds, but the guards outsmarted them this time.

This smuggler was hoping no one would check the wheels, and actually formed their cocaine to fit perfectly inside the rim. Assuming no one notices the rattling, this plan should have been flawless.

If you're smuggling drugs, nothing makes quite as much sense as putting those drugs behind pictures of Jesus. Something something moral compass.

Ramp Fail

Candy Eggs

To be fair, these are some super delicious looking croissants. And they come with money inside! Too bad you can't bring them across the border.

Once you pop, you just can't stop! Which is a terrible tragedy.

At least they were nice enough to poke holes in the book to give him some air to breath... The poor little guy looks super cramped up in there, with no room to move.

Who would suspect a boring door of being completely filled with cocaine? A customs agent apparently.

If you can't go across the border yourself, why not just launch your drugs over it? With a modified t-shirt cannon, smugglers just launched their product into a field to hopefully be picked up later. Not this time, though.

Mr. Potato Head was rolling hard, as he was stuffed with this bag of ecstasy.

These shells were glued shut, each containing a bit of cocaine. They didn't expect anyone to inspect them, I guess!

An entire shipment of bolts turned out to be hollow and filled with drugs. That's a lot of effort to put into smuggling; to have the capacity to actually produce hollow bolts is impressive.

Holy Water
These bottles of "holy water" were actually filled with Ketamine. If you drink it, it's probably not the power of God you're feeling...
