Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar II official for UFC 150 in Denver

Benson Henderson's first defense of the UFC lightweight title is official.

UFC president Dana White today confirmed Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar have will meet at UFC 150 on Aug. 11. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported the likely date this past month.

White made the official announcement during tonight's new edition of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV.

Denver's Pepsi Center hosts the event, which includes a pay-per-view main card and prelims on FX and Facebook.

Edgar (14-2-1 MMA, 9-2-1 UFC), of course, surrendered the belt to Henderson (16-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at February's UFC 144 event via unanimous decision.

UFC president Dana White initially encouraged Edgar to drop to 145 pounds and challenge UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo for the title. However, Edgar remained intent on fighting again for the lightweight belt, and a bit of fan lobbying and fighter encouragement eventually led White to change his mind and award a rematch to "The Answer."

Edgar, of course, is no stranger to rematches. Henderson marks the third straight opponent whom he's faced in back-to-back fights after tussling with Gray Maynard and B.J. Penn.

Meanwhile, former WEC champ Henderson looks to remain perfect under the UFC banner. Anthony Pettis defeated "Smooth" in the final WEC event, but Henderson had picked up wins over Mark Bocek, Jim Miller and Clay Guida to earn his title shot before taking the decision win over Edgar.

Pettis initially was expected to get the next shot at Henderson after earning a knockout win over Joe Lauzon at UFC 144. Instead, he now waits on a new opponent.

Urijah Faber will fight for interim bantamweight title at UFC 148

Although he won't fight UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber will get to fight for a title.

A replacement opponent hasn't been determined, but UFC president Dana White today said Faber will fight the UFC's interim bantamweight title in July at UFC 148.

Cruz bowed out of the fight earlier this week after tearing his ACL, though White said he'll remain a coach on "The Ultimate Fighter: Live."

UFC 148 takes place July 7 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view, and FX and Facebook are expected to carry the prelims. Cruz (19-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) vs. Faber (26-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) III originally was expected to take the headlining slot of the event, but logistical issues forced the move of Anderson Silva (31-4 MMA, 14-0 UFC) vs. Chael Sonnen (27-11-1 MMA, 6-4 UFC) II from UFC 147 to the UFC 148 main-event slot.

"I'm looking for the right opponent – the guy who deserves this shot at Urijah Faber," White said on "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV.

Leading candidates include Renan Barao (28-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and Ivan Menjivar (24-8 MMA, 3-0 UFC) – who are slated to meet at UFC 148 – as well as Michael McDonald (15-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC), who recently knocked out former WEC champ Miguel Torres at UFC 145.

Cruz is the only fighter to hold a bantamweight title in the UFC, which adopted the weight class in 2011. Cruz, the WEC's final champ in the weight class, retained the title with his move to the UFC.

UFC on FOX 4 adds Mitrione vs. Broughton, Thompson vs. De Fries

UFC ON FOX 4 IS SHAPING UP TO BE A PRETTY ENTERTAINING CARD...

August's UFC on FOX 4 lineup has added a pair of heavyweight fights.

They include Matt Mitrione (5-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC), who looks to rebound from his first career loss when he meets British fighter Rob Broughton (15-7-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC), as well as English fighters Oli Thompson (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) vs. Phil De Fries (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

UFC officials today confirmed the matchups.

UFC on FOX 4 takes place Aug. 4 at Los Angeles' Staples Center. The main card, including a Brian Stann vs. Hector Lombard headliner, airs on FOX. Today's new additions are likely to be part of the preliminary card, which is expected to air on FUEL TV and stream on Facebook.

Mitrione, who joined the UFC after a semifinal-round finish on "The Ultimate Fighter 10," won his first five pro fights and surged into title contention. However, the NFL vet then suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Cheick Kongo at UFC 137 in October, which marks his most recent performance.

His opponent, Broughton, could be fighting for his UFC life. After joining the UFC and picking uo his seventh win in eight fights with a submission victory over Vinicius Queiroz in his promotional debut at UFC 120, the former Cage Rage champion has suffered back-to-back losses to Travis Browne and De Fries.

Thompson, meanwhile, is a former "strongman" competitor who made his injury-delayed promotional debut in March, where he suffered a TKO loss to Shawn Jordan at UFC on FX 2. It snapped the British fighter's five-fight win streak.

He takes on De Fries, who also looks to rebound from a loss. After opening his career with an 8-0 record, which included a decision win over Broughton in his UFC debut, the Brit suffered a knockout loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC on FUEL TV 1 back in February.

The latest UFC on FOX 4 card now includes:

Retired UFC vet Chris Lytle falls short in Indiana Senate run

Chris Lytle's Indiana Senate run came up a bit short.

Lytle, who retired from the UFC this past year after a long and productive fighting career, lost the Republican bid for a state Senate nomination in District 28.

In Tuesday's three-horse race, Lytle (30 percent of the vote) finished behind winner Mike Crider (41 percent) but ahead of John Merlau (29 percent).

"Almost," Lytle tweeted on Tuesday after the vote tallies. "I finished 2nd. It was a good fight."

Lytle, an Indianapolis firefighter who lives in New Palestine, Ind., concluded a memorable 20-fight UFC career with a third-round submission victory over Dan Hardy in the headliner of this past August's UFC on Versus 5 event. In trademark fashion, he picked up the night's "Fight of the Night" and "Submission of the Night" bonuses. Such awards (including a record six "Fight of the Night" bonuses) accounted for $515,000 in extra pay during his decade-long UFC career.

Despite a 5-1 record in his final six fights, the 37-year-old married father of four opted to retire so he could spend more time at home. However, a month after his retirement, he announced his Senate run.

"They're a little disappointed because [my family was] like, 'Oh man, I thought you were going to be home all the time now,'" Lytle told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) back in October. "I'm busy, but I get to be home with my kids at night now, so that's great."

Lytle, who first considered a career in politics when he was involved in Indiana's move to MMA regulation in 2009, ran on a platform focused on job creation, education, gun rights, illegal immigration and other issues

Bellator and TNA Wrestling to announce 'King Mo' signing today

Former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal has a new home.

Bellator and TNA Wrestling executives have set a conference call for 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT) today to announce a "major talent deal."

It's the signing of Lawal (8-1), who will split his time between MMA (Bellator) and pro wrestling (TNA) once healed from a knee injury.

Terms of the deal are expected to be announced during the media call. Spike TV airs TNA Wrestling, and Bellator moves to the cable channel in 2013.

Strikeforce severed ties with the 31-year-old amateur-wrestling standout back in March. After defeating Lorenz Larkin via second-round knockout at "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" in January, Lawal failed a post-fight drug test due to the steroid Drostanolone.

Lawal blamed the failed test on an over-the-counter testosterone supplement he used to combat instability in his knee. Nonetheless, the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended him nine months, overturned the win to a no-contest, and fined the fighter $39,000.

Following the March 27 hearing, Lawal took particular aim at NSAC commissioner Pat Lundvall, who asked the fighter whether he read and understood English in relation to a pre-fight questionnaire that required him to disclose any medications he had taken two weeks prior to the fight, as well as any injuries he might have sustained.

Lawal called Lundvall a "racist bitch" in a tweet following the hearing. UFC president Dana White then decided to cut Lawal from the Zuffa roster.

Lawal ultimately apologized in a personal phone call with the commissioner, and as recently as this past month, White didn't discount the possibility of Lawal returning to the organization, as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently reported.

"We'll see how this whole thing goes down," White said on April 14. "The fact that he called her and reached out to her, I mean that's what he should have done. It's respectable. I respect that."

But instead, Lawal will join Bellator's 205-pound division, which is one of Bellator's shallowest weight classes. The current champ is Christian M'Pumbu, who lost a non-title fight with Travis Wiuff back in October.

Lawal's suspension runs until Oct. 7, which means he likely wouldn't be cleared in time for the start of a season-seven light-heavyweight tournament. He's also still recovering from a knee surgery and subsequent staph infection that followed his January fight.

Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson title fight headlines UFC 151 in Las Vegas

As expected, UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (16-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) and Dan Henderson (29-8 MMA, 5-2 UFC) will headline UFC 151 on Sept. 1.

UFC president Dana White officially announced the title fight via Twitter and said it'll take place in Las Vegas.

The UFC boss first hinted at the likely date for Jones vs. Henderson this past week.

No venue has been announced for the title fight, which will air on pay-per-view. FX and Facebook are expected to carry the prelims.

Jones, who's quickly emerged as one of MMA's biggest stars, earned a unanimous-decision victory over Rashad Evans at UFC 145. It marked his seventh straight win, his fourth consecutive victory over a former UFC champ, and his third consecutive title defense. It also cemented his status as one of the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters.

Henderson, meanwhile, is on a 7-1 run that includes fights at middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. The heavyweight win came over Fedor Emelianenko under the Strikeforce banner. After re-signing with the UFC, Henderson then topped light heavyweight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a "Fight of the Year" performance at UFC 139. Since then, he's waited on the sidelines for his promised title shot.

UFC 151 comes three weeks after UFC 150 in Denver and three weeks prior to UFC 152 in Toronto.

'Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy' slated for July 14 in Portland, Larkin-Lawler add

A middleweight title fight between champion Luke Rockhold (9-1 MMA, 8-0 SF) and Tim Kennedy (14-3 MMA, 5-1 SF) will headline a major Strikeforce show in Oregon.

Strikeforce officials today announced the event, which takes place July 14 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.

Other announced bouts include middleweights Lorenz Larkin (12-0 MMA, 3-0 SF) vs. Robbie Lawler (19-8 MMA, 3-4 SF) and middleweights Roger Gracie (4-1 MMA, 2-1 SF) vs. Keith Jardine (17-10-2 MMA, 0-1-1 SF).

The night's main card airs on Showtime, and Showtime Extreme carries the prelims.

Despite today's announcements, an expected welterweight title fight between Nate Marquardt (31-10-2 MMA, 0-0 SF) and Tyron Woodley (10-0 MMA, 8-0 SF) wasn't mentioned.

Rockhold looks for his second successful title defense since narrowly winning the belt from Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and then defending it with a January knockout of Jardine. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter now has eight straight wins, all of which have come in Strikeforce.

Kennedy fought for the vacant Strikeforce title in August 2010 and suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Souza. Since, then, the IFL/WEC vet climbed back into title contention with a submission victory over Melvin Manhoef and a decision win over Lawler. However, the title fight will mark his first fight in nearly a year.

Larkin, meanwhile, carries a perfect record into the fight. However, it's only after his January knockout loss to Muhammed Lawal was changed to a no-contest when "King Mo" failed a post-fight drug test. Prior to the bout, Larkin opened his career with a perfect 12-0 record that included eight knockouts.

Lawler recently snapped out of a 1-3 skid with a dazzling flying-knee TKO of Adlan Amagov in January. Prior to the much-needed win, the former EliteXC champion had suffered losses to notables such as Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Souza (title fight) and Kennedy.

Finally, after submission wins over the likes of light heavyweights Kevin Randleman and Trevor Prangley, Gracie suffered his first pro-MMA loss to Lawal back in September. Gracie decided to drop a weight class after the knockout loss. The world-champion grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt recently had mentioned a desire to fight in the UFC, though UFC president Dana White denied a subsequent rumored move.

Jardine gets a third shot at a first Strikeforce win. The longtime UFC fighter joined Strikeforce a year ago after a pair of wins over Francisco France and Aron Lofton in regional competition. After fighting Strikeforce's Gegard Mousasi to a majority draw in a late-replacement booking, he dropped to middleweight but suffered a TKO loss to champion Rockhold in January.

Penn explains why he turned down Melendez

BJ Penn has explained why he chose not to fight Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, revealing he thought it would be a step down to fight outside the UFC.

Penn is expected to step out of retirement at some point in the future, with UFC president Dana White adamant he will fight again. However, White revealed the Prodigy turned down a big fight with Melendez, something Penn does not deny.

"It was right after the Nick Diaz fight [which Penn lost convincingly]," Penn told The MMA Hour.

"[White] offered a fight against Gilbert Melendez in Strikeforce. We sat down and we thought about it for a little while. We talked back and forth.

"It was kind of one of those things where I guess at the end of the day we thought about it a thousand different ways and we were like, 'Is that downgrading yourself fighting in Strikeforce? If you win the Strikeforce title are people going to say you did it because you couldn't win the UFC title?'

"At the end of the day, it just didn't make sense to us."

White believes Penn will, at some point, return to the UFC welterweight division in the future. However, Penn insists it is still his dream to be world champion again, which would suggest lightweight is his more viable option - given that Georges St-Pierre still reigns at 170lbs.

"You have dreams and aspirations to what you can accomplish," Penn said. "You never know what's going to be reality at the end of the day. I don't feel like I've done enough. I'd love to become a world champion again. I'm sure every fighter out there, that's all they think about all the time."

World Jiu-Jitsu Expo Today, Features Nick Diaz-Estima Superfight...

World Jiu-Jitsu Expo will take place later today at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.

The event will feature six grappling superfights between some of the very best male and female submission grapplers on the planet. Sitting atop the lineup of BJJ superfights is a no-gi match between submission wizard Braulio Estima and MMA renegade Nick Diaz.

Currently retired from mixed martial arts and battling it out with the Nevada State Athletic Commission over his marijuana suspension, the competition against Estima should provide the elder of the fighting Diaz brothers with a nice distraction as well as an outlet for his competitive drive.

Diaz is pegged as the underdog by a wide margin to Estima, who is considered by many to be the world’s best submission grappler.
