Dana White: Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez is headed to the UFC, ASAP

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez's days in the organization appear over.

The standout lightweight will join the UFC's roster "ASAP," according to UFC president Dana White.

A debut date and opponent haven't been determined, but White said it'll happen sooner rather than later. And if the timing is right, it could lead to an immediate UFC title shot.

"Yeah, we do want to bring Gilbert Melendez over, and we're looking at it right now," White said following Saturday's UFC on Versus 6 event at Washington, D.C.'s Verizon Center. "We're looking to bring Gilbert Melendez over ASAP."

White, who also said Strikeforce heavyweight Fabricio Werdum (14-5-1 MMA, 3-1 SF) is likely to return to the organization, spoke definitively about the Melendez (19-2 MMA, 9-1 SF) move for the first time ever. After the UFC purchased Strikeforce earlier this year, he hinted at the possibility but stopped short of saying there was a concrete plan.

However, Melendez, who recently cracked the top 10 in the media-voted Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings, now is making the move.

Melendez, an early WEC fighter who's fought with Strikeforce and PRIDE since early 2006, is carrying a five-fight win streak with wins over notables such as Josh Thomson, Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Currently, he's slated to fight Jorge Masvidal in a Dec. 17 title fight, though it's not clear how a possible move to the UFC could affect those plans.

White, though, isn't counting out the possibility that Melendez could get an immediate title shot in the UFC. While he's earned top-contender status on merit, White said it'll depend more on the timing of the title picture, which gets some clarity next weekend when UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar takes on Gray Maynard.

"[The title shot] is a possibility," he said. "The thing is with that division, it's so stacked, there are a lot of possibilities.

"We'll see what happens with the timing."

February's simultaneous Japan and Las Vegas UFC shows both will air live on TV

WASHINGTON, D.C. – MMA fans should get ready for a double dose of the UFC in February.

As expected, the UFC will, in fact, hold shows in Japan and Las Vegas on the same day in February.

So how would it work logistically, specifically with TV viewers in mind? It won't be an issue, according to UFC president Dana White, who said viewers can expect an event doubleheader.

As White previously announced, the UFC, which hasn't promoted a show in Japan since UFC 29 in late 2000, heads to Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on Feb. 26, 2012. To accommodate the traditional live North American broadcasting on Saturday night, Feb. 25, the event takes place Sunday morning at 10 a.m. local time.

But White threw fans an additional curveball this past week when he said a show will take place the same day in Las Vegas. Both will air live on TV.

"It's going to happen," White said. "It'll be live in Japan and live in the United States.

"The fight in Japan would go live on free TV before the (Las Vegas) pay-per-view."

White hasn't determined what "free TV" outlet will carry the Japanese show, though FX – which is part of the FOX deal that kicks of in 2012 – is a possibility.

White said additional details will be announced in the coming months.

But despite the dual shows, White assured no fans will get cheated. Each event will have a stellar lineup of the UFC's top talent.

"Both cards would be stacked," he said.

From a logistical standpoint, UFC executive Reed Harris told MMAjunkie.com this past week that dual shows aren't a problem.

"I don't think there will be any challenges," he said. "(In) our company, we have a lot of people that do this. We have different crews, we have different teams that go out and do these events. Obviously, if we have events that go week after week, we don't use the same team."

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal Official for Strikeforce in December

Gilbert Melendez will have to wait a little longer to fight in the UFC.

Strikeforce announced on Tuesday that "El Nino" will in fact defend his lightweight title against Jorge Masvidal on Dec. 17 in San Diego, Calif. The card will take place at Valley View Casino Center, and tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Melendez met with UFC president Dana White over the weekend to discuss the possibility of unifying the Strikeforce and UFC lightweight title but no deal was reached.

"I just wanted to discuss my future with the organization," Melendez said Monday on The MMA Hour. "I just expressed that I want to fight the best."

Melendez (19-2) has won his last five fights in a row. He most recently defeated Tatsuya Kawajiri via first-round TKO at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley, which also took place in San Diego.

Masvidal (22-6) is 2-0 since returning to Strikeforce, defeating Billy Evangelista and KJ Noons.

Also officially announced for the card is Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Hiroko Yamanaka for the Strikeforce women's featherweight title, Gegard Mousasi vs. Ovince St. Preux and local favorite KJ Noons is expected to meet Billy Evangelista.

The main card will air live on Showtime.

Cruz wrecked his hand again.

"It's basically the exact same injury I had on my hand. Same knuckle, same everything. The tendon is completely ripped off the bone and my finger is popping out of its socket due to that. And the knuckle just dislocates when I make a fist. I have to get that tendon that ripped reattached with surgery. After I got the surgery on my left hand the doctor said it would be stronger. And it's true. It is stronger. He put an extra piece of tendon over the top of the knuckle so it's braced for impact. He did some voodoo stuff with it that he drilled a hole through the knuckle and tied it so tight that there's no way for that tendon to lift back up off the bone again. I really feel like it's stronger than it was in the first place and I won't have any issues with it anymore."

King Mo calls out Rampage, vows not to take him down

http://www.mmamania.com/2011/10/17/2495429/rampage-jackson-boxing-king-mo-takedowns
(video in link)

"Enough of the talk, let's do the action. Let's bang then, dawg. You're talkin' about you wanna box, you can box me! I won't take you down, you know what I'm sayin'? Or you can holla at my boy James Toney and be a sparring partner for him. Pick your poison. You can getcha ass whipped in boxing by James Toney, or you can getcha ass whipped by me in MMA. I'll stand and box with you."

lmao King hoMo CANNOT box. Dude thinks he can box, but he can't. Dude thinks he's sick trying to shoulder roll and shit but he aint. Rampage would lay his ass the fuck out. Rampage's biggest problem is he's completely one dimensional in his standup, but don't get it twisted if Mo tried to go just hands with Page he will get KTFO'd. Rampage has big power, sick head movement and defense, and a solid chin.

lol he has to land a punch first and to do that he needs good footwork. thats one of the reasons he got whooped on by jon jones(footwork was terrible). dont think King Mo is gonna stand there face to face and trade shots like Wanderlei Silva lol(thats dumb). if Rampage taps anyone in the MMA on they chin they getting dropped. King Mo got hands aswell and better footwork, he would beat Rampage.

and rampage is thinking about boxing, he would get embarrassed with that footwork on the top level

umm his footwork was terrible against Jon Jones because of all of Jone's tools. He throws a million different strikes and his reach is insane. That push kick to the knee was fucking with Rampage all night. King hoMo says he wants to go pure hands. What makes people think this guy can box? Because he knocked out a jiu jitsu guy? King Mo hasn't fought ANYONE. Everyone he's fought is a nobody(yes, even gegard).
