Haye – Klitschko possible for Wembley Stadium

By John F. McKenna (McJack): The rumors continue to circulate that World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) will fight former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) at Wembley Stadium.

There has been no definitive announcement by either the Klitschko or Haye camps but Vitali has gone on record numerous times to say that he wants to “send Haye to the Floor.”

Normally when a fighter challenges for a lucrative heavyweight title shot and loses, he has to fight his way back into contention as Chris Arreola is doing. Not only did Haye lose when he fought heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in July, he was totally dominated and humiliated in the process. To make matters worse Haye among other things had said that he would leave Wladimir “whimpering on the floor”.

Instead of taking the normal route Haye said that he would not postpone his retirement unless he received a rematch with Wladimir. “Dr. Steelhammer” of course turned down Haye’s request for a rematch. Vitali on the other hand said that while he was happy that his brother had won a lopsided decision over the “Hayemaker” he would be willing to fight him so that he could knock him out. As a matter of fact Vitali called David out after his TKO victory over Tomasz Adamek last Saturday night.

Haye who had held steadfast to his plans to retire upon his 31st birthday in October has recently remained mum on the subject of his future plans. But after spending some time with his family while on vacation in the Carribean, and hanging out with Lennox Lewis, Haye has apparently changed his mind. David now says that he will delay his retirement for six months if given the opportunity to fight Vitali Klitschko. Supposedly Lewis gave Haye some encouragement and tips on how to beat Vitali. Klitschko was stopped in 2003 by Lennox after he opened up a horrific cut after being behind on the scorecards.

What Haye has going for him is that Vitali Klitschko really wants him. He wants to fight Haye so that he can get revenge for all the things he said about him and his brother Wladimir. A vendetta is always a good selling point when attempting to put together a fight. The other thing that makes putting such a match together quickly is that Vitali really has no other competition.

Dawson, the mandatory challenger, will face Hopkins at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Oct. 15 (HBO PPV).

Steward said he was surprised by the switch.

"About a month ago I was talking to Herman Woodard (Dawson's lawyer) and he told me Chad's wife just had a baby and that he wanted to train close to home because of the new baby," Steward told ESPN.com. "I said I was not for that. And then I didn't hear anything from anyone. I called Chad twice to see when he was coming to camp and he never returned the calls. Then I talked to (Dawson promoter) Gary Shaw about 10 days ago and he said Chad told him he wanted to train on the East Coast. But Chad never talked to me. I can't leave my training camp in Detroit. I have (middleweight) Andy Lee getting ready for a big fight, I am training Ronald Hearns again. I can't pack everyone up. In boxing, unless you are a big name, like a Wladimir Klitschko (whom Steward trains), the fighter comes to where the trainer is at. That's always the way it has been.

"Even guys like Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, both stars -- they train with Freddie Roach and they go to his gym. Chad is not on that level. I cannot just uproot everybody and start trying to find places for everyone to stay. I was under the impression Chad was coming to Detroit. I had a place all ready for him. Then Herman called me a few days ago and said, 'I cannot believe this, but he wants to stay home.' Every day I wanted to know where he was. He should have been in camp with me a month ago."

Now he is back with Scully, one of the many trainers the 29-year-old Dawson (30-1, 17 KOs) has gone though. That list also includes Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Floyd Mayweather Sr., Dan Birmingham and Steward. Assisting Scully, who has been in camp with Dawson for a couple of weeks despite the formal announcement not coming until Monday night, is former undisputed junior middleweight champion Winky Wright.

"It wasn't an ugly separation by any means. I have a world of respect for Emanuel and I know he's top-notch, but we couldn't get them to travel to one another, so there was no other choice but to move on," Shaw said.

"Chad's training camp is in Pennsylvania. He didn't want to train in Detroit again for this fight. But with all of his commitments and responsibilities, it wasn't feasible for Emanuel to stay in the Poconos that long. So they've parted ways amicably and John Scully is back in, with Winky Wright providing his expert eye."

Said Dawson, "Everything is going great. I couldn't ask for anything better. I'm in a great position right now. Not only to fight with Bernard, but to work with John Scully, who is very underrated as a trainer, and Winky, who I think beat Hopkins when they fought and is still a great fighter to this day. I'm very excited. I have great sparring partners and it's going great.

"Scully knows how to go to get me in shape. With him in my corner, you will see a return of the Chad Dawson from 2007-2008 in this fight. I am the best light heavyweight in the world and I'm going to prove it."

Scully said he was very surprised and happy to be asked to return to training Dawson.

"I've always said that training him was one of the most positive experiences of my career and I always felt we had a very good working relationship," Scully said. "He's looking perfect in camp so far. He's a champion at heart and knows what needs to be done to get ready for a fight like this and he's doing it."

Wright, who is friends with Dawson, said he is just there to provide some tips and see if he can pick up anything. He said he has no plans to go into active training.

"No way," said Wright, who will not work in Dawson's corner on the night of the fight. "I'm still a fighter. I don't feel like being a trainer. I don't know how to tell somebody to train. I can tell you what you're doing wrong and stuff like that, but as far as telling them when to get up and run, I'm not really into that. I'm here to just fine-tune little things that John and I feel he needs to work on. John is the coach and we are working together very well."

Wright, who lost a clear unanimous decision to Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) in 2007, said he likes Dawson's chances in the fight, even if he is an underdog to Hopkins.

"Bernard is sneaky and crafty, but I think that Chad has a style that can beat him. He's tall and quick, with a good defense and hand speed," Wright said. "He can move, but he's not scared to get in there and fight. Bernard wants to try and take you out of your fight. Chad doesn't need to do that. He needs to do what we're showing him and make Hopkins fight our fight. We can win this."

LOL.. I thought Manny agreed to testing a year ago let the Manny fans tell it. Look here testing is never a big deal to Manny when he's already fighting someone else.. Prove to me that you agree to random testing by signing the damn contract this time and stop making excuses. Mayweather pulled Manny's and Top Ranks card by not backing down from testing. If the fight don't happen it's because Manny ducked out just like last time.

let's just hope floyd doesn't take a vacation after he beats Ortiz. I mean he said this yesterday:

Ann Wolfe On Kirkland Vs. Angulo - “James Has Nothing To Lose And Everything To Gain

By James Slater: A most interesting light-middleweight clash is in the works and very close to being signed, with bombers James Kirkland, 29-1(26) and Alfredo Angulo, 20-1(17) in negotiations to fight in Mexico on November 5th. Needless to say, this fight has “action” written all over it.

Upon reading that the fight was in the works, I called up 27-year-old Kirkland’s trainer, Ann Wolfe. Ann told me that as far as her side is concerned, the fight is “done.”

Very kindly taking the time to speak with me last night UK time, Ann had the following things to say:


James Slater: Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with me, Anne. It’s on certain sites on the net that James Kirkland will be fighting Alfredo Angulo on November 5th in Mexico. Is this a done deal on your side?

Anne Wolfe: Yeah, it’s just about signed. We’ve had no paper work yet, but it’s a done deal as far as we’re concerned. They offered us this fight and I think James should definitely take it. He has to prove himself in this fight; prove that he is a fighter.

J.S: This looks a dangerous fight - for both guys!

A.W: The way I look at it: any fight is a dangerous fight! One punch is all it takes for any fighter - I don’t care how good you are or how good you think you are - to get knocked out! Nobody in a million years felt [Nobuhiro] Ishida was a dangerous fight at all for James. But I wasn’t in the corner with James for that fight.

J.S: I know you weren’t, and that’s why James lost. Everybody said that. Will the Angulo fight be fought at 154 or at 160?

A.W: 154.

J.S: Is this a 50-50 fight in your opinion?

A.W: In my view - I wasn’t going to give any interviews ahead of this fight, and I’ve told James not to give any - It don’t matter what I say or what James says before this fight; it’s all about James proving himself in the fight. You know as well as I do, that every person, behind closed doors, will say that James gets knocked out in this fight. That’s what they’ll all say; because we know Angulo has tremendous power. So James has to prove himself and then he can give interviews after the fight. James has to prove what he can do in this fight. But James has nothing to lose and everything to gain in this fight - because no-one is giving him a chance. Angulo has it all to lose! People will say that a snowman fighting in hell would have more of a chance than James does in this fight!

J.S: You’ve seen a lot of Angulo?

A.W: I’ve seen Angulo, yes. A lot of people don’t know, but James and Angulo sparred once, they sparred one round.

J.S: Both guys deserve a ton of credit for taking this fight! Do you see it as power Vs. power?

A.W: Of course. And we all know James can punch, that we don’t have to prove! And Angulo has never boxed a lefthander before. Angulo had better know he has to be able to take James’ power. He [Angulo] had better hope he wins this in the first-round. Of course this fight is power Vs. power, no-one will say it’s chin Vs. chin, but everyone knows they can both punch. Angulo has never been hit as hard as he will get hit on November 5th, and from the left side. Angulo has never faced anyone with James’ speed and pressure, either.

J.S: The winner of this one more than deserves a title shot, no doubt?

A.W: That’s what I say. But let James prove himself in this fight first. We can’t say shit until this fight is done. We can do interviews after this fight is over with.

Pacquiao should be able to train where he usually trains period.... not sure if Floyd will use that as an "excuse" because I believe he wants the fight and is tired of hearing about Pacquiao. Pacquiao should be tested by the USADA a few times before they fight. They should test him as soon as he hits the United States and leave it at that.

Boxer Monty Barrett Looking To Join WWE

The boxer looks to become a sports entertainer…

- Heavyweight boxer Monte "Two Gunz" Barrett says that he's heading to Florida Championship Wrestling at the end of October for a two week training session. Following that, Barrett says he will return to FCW for two more months of training. Barrett had the following to say about training…

"I gotta call [WWE senior director of talent relations] Ty Bailey this week and go through some of the particulars, but I know whatever it's gonna be, it will be a lot of hard work. I told him I will commit 110% and put my best foot forward with everything that I do."

Haye: I’m waiting for old man Vitali to contact my management for a fight

By Sean McDaniel: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) says that WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) still hasn’t contacted him about putting together a fight between the two. Haye wants Vitali to contact his management so they can get this fight put together as soon as possible.

Speaking with the German daily Die Welt, Haye said “I’ll know him [Vitali] out, I’ll smash his jaw…It doesn’t matter where you are, I’ll fight you on the moon…[If he wants to fight] then he should get in touch with my management and get the contract in the bag. He has my contact details. I am waiting for him and urge him on. No fight at heavyweight would generate more publcity than Haye against the old man Klitschko. I am the most popular heavyweight on the planet and with me he will earn the most money.”

Haye wants the fight but I’m not so certain Vitali is ready to fight Haye right now. Vitali is talking about wanting to fight again in November, and that’s too soon for Haye. You can’t market a fight that quickly, and Haye will need much more time to get ready because he’s been idle since suffering a 12 round decision loss against Wladimir Klitschko last July.

Haye injured his right little toe before that fight, and he feels that the injury prevented him from being able to drive off of the foot. Haye had problems with Wladimir’s movement in the fight, and had to chase him around a lot of the time. Haye finally caught up to Wladimir in the 12th round and hurt him with a big right hand, but time ran out before Haye could add anything else.

Haye was frustrated by Wladimir’s constant clinching in the fight, saying “Wladimir ran away when I tried to hit him or he held onto me and pulled me to the ground. unfortunately, the referee had to go through all that cheekiness. Vitali has indeed got more balls, but he is also a scared rabbit.”

Wladimir did do a lot of shoving and pulling on Haye to get him to fall down in the fight. Wladimir was penalized once for his rough stuff but probably should have lost points on three or four more occasions to get him to stop with the extracurricular activities. But the fight was in Germany where Wladimir lives and is a big star, so it was expected. If the fight had taken place in England and Haye hadn’t come into the bout without any injuries it might have been a much different story. However, the good thing about a potential Vitali vs. Haye fight is Vitali already said he’s open to fighting Haye in England.

Khan Calls Mayweather “Chicken” - Accuses Floyd Of Avoiding Him

By James Slater: Are British fighters, or at least reigning world championship fighters from Britain, becoming more and more outspoken, even arrogant? We have David Haye, a heavy points loser to Waldimir Klitschko last time out, calling Vitali a “scared rabbit,” and now we have Amir Khan lashing out at Floyd Mayweather Junior and calling him “chicken.”

Years ago, during the late great Sir Henry Cooper’s time at the top, the British approach was always one of a gentlemanly nature, with no trash-talking (or whatever it was called way back then) of any kind to be heard. Things sure have changed!

Anyway, Khan, the reigning WBA and IBF 140-pound champion, in another seemingly desperate attempt (at least in my view) at getting the great “Money” Mayweather to agree to fight him, has flat-out claimed the unbeaten 41-0 master is “doing everything” to avoid him.

“In my opinion, Mayweather is a chicken,” Khan told U.K tabloid The Sun. “He is doing everything to avoid me just as he did everything to avoid fighting Manny Pacquiao. I don’t want to sound cocky or arrogant but I believe the real reason for Mayweather avoiding me is that he knows I have his number. Mayweather knows if he fights me his O will go.

“All Floyd does is pick fights he knows he will win. I thought world championship boxing was about proving who is the best but if he keeps turning his back on me how can he still say he is the best?”

But why on earth does Mayweather, a welterweight, have to fight Khan, a man who has not yet boxed above 140-pounds, to prove he is “still the best?” And isn’t Mayweather two days away from a fight with the reigning WBC welterweight king, in Victor Ortiz? Has Khan actually lost the plot, or is he simply trying all the goading he can in an attempt to make Mayweather bite and agree to fight him? Hell, such an approach worked for Khan’s countryman David Haye (and may work again if Vitali agrees to defend his WBC belt against the Londoner).

With all due respect (something neither Khan nor Haye have been showing towards Mayweather and Klitschko respectively), trash-talking in boxing is something that used to be heard only in America. It seems our British stars have now fully adopted the art.

Schaefer expects Mayweather-Ortiz to draw 1.7 to 1.8 million PPV buys

Williams: Photo credit: Sumio Yamada – Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer sees this Saturday’s mega fight between undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) and WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) bringing in between 1.7 to 1.8 million pay per view buys.

This would make it the second largest PPV fight ever, behind the 2.4 million PPV buys the Mayweather vs. Oscard De La Hoya fight brought in during 2007. In comparison, Manny Pacquiao, who is supposed to be boxing’s cash cow in the minds of some boxing fans, brought in 1.3 million buys for his fight against and over the hill 39-year-old Shane Mosley recently, and 1.25 million buys for Pacquiao’s bout against a shot Oscar De La Hoya in 2008.

The reason this is important is that if Mayweather can bring in between 1.7 to 1.8 million PPV buys for the Ortiz fight and Pacquiao comes up with much lower numbers for his third fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in November, it would put Mayweather in a position to ask for more than 50% of the revenue for a fight against Pacquiao.

You can’t realistically expect Pacquiao to get the same amount of money for a fight against Mayweather when Mayweather is bringing in the bigger numbers over and over again. Huge PPV numbers for the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight will put Mayweather in a very good bargaining position for a fight against Pacquiao. You really can’t argue that Pacquiao deserves an equal amount as Mayweather when Pacquiao simply isn’t bringing in the cash the way that Mayweather is.

Speaking with mlive.com, Schaefer said “The numbers should be somewhere between 1.7 or 1.8 million range.”

There it is. Schaefer has been doing his math already using his own detailed approach to adding up the potential numbers and he feels that this is going to be a huge PPV fight for Mayweather-Ortiz. At the very least, the fight will bring in 1.5 million but it should bring in better numbers.
