manny does it, why cant cotto?
Hopkins has had several catchweight fights, sugar ray leonard had a couple, gatti/ward all three fights were catchweights, floyd had one, henry armstrong had several catchweight fights, etc etc etc.

the only thing that some people are irritated with cotto is the fact he's fought at 154 the last couple fights. So the only reason he's demanding a catchweight against margarito is to get an advantage, otherwise there is no point to it.

Cotto vs Canelo (would be big)
Cotto vs Chavez jr (would be big)
Cotto vs Berto (if he beats Zaveck)
Cotto vs Martinez

The last two probably wouldn't be on PPV, but Cotto would get a nice $2 million+ payday.

I guess Margarito could possibly fight Martinez. It certainly wouldn't be a PPV though and I'm not sure what kind of money he'd get, plus it would be a vicious beating at this point of his career.
chavez cant make under 160 so no,berto nah, martinez cotto already said he dont want to fight him, canelo yea thatz about it......who knows wat happens. never was a cotto fan dont care wat he does or how much $$$$ fighters make i want to see fights.....margarito vs vanes, margarito vs angulo, margarito vs martinez dont count out margarito yet if that eye holds up hell be back making noise at 154 watch out now

cotto and chavez have already discussed a possible fight and bob arum said he would fight at 160 or a catchweight of like 158.

margarito vs vanes/angulo/martinez none of those fights will give him as much as a Cotto rematch. That's a big fight. All I'm saying is cotto has the upperhand, he does not like margarito and feels he cheated in their first fight and because of that he's trying to make him do what he says. Is it right or wrong I don't care. Just sayin

LOL. It seems like Cotto is scared to fight a live body and he's just trying to stack the cards in his favor. So the 154lb champion is defending his belt at a 150lb catchweight is the new thing to do now? SMH It's nothing more then a bitch move made by a already shot fighter trying to milk his career a little longer. Don't be scared Cotto.. LOL..

he's just trying to make margarito his bitch.

"Despite Cotto‘s politically correct answer, it’s clear that there is bad blood between the two. When Arum introduced Margarito at the post-fight press conference and the disgraced Mexican walked to the dais to offer Cotto his hand, the proud Puerto Rican refused to shake it. When Maragrito began talking to the media, Cotto abruptly left the press conference."

If Margarito wore loaded gloves in their first fight, let Cotto have a catchweight if he wants.

Margarito is not going to make any noise at 154. After the Mosley and Manny beatdowns his chin will never be the same. He will be nothing more then a gatekeeper.

right, plus with that eye socket you just don't know how his face will hold up.

I think he knows Cotto is the biggest payday out there for him at this point. or like I said he could fight up and comers for a fraction of that. Sure, fight Angulo and get a few hundred thousand. Fight Canelo and maybe maybe half a mil. Fight Cotto and it's a $1 million + gaurantee, plus PPV sales.

I have to co-sign this statement. Loaded gloves had nothing to do with Margarito walking thru Cotto's best punches that night. Margarito should TKO Cotto again late in the fight.

Margarito is done in my opinion, regardless of who he fights right now.
He just hasn't been looking good at all. It's nice to have him fight and earn a living but I can almost guarantee that he will never win a legitimate title again.

Maidana open to fighting Erik Morales or Timothy Bradley if Khan won’t step up

By William Mackay: If WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) had his way he would be fighting Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) next or at least before the end of the year. Khan is scheduled to fight on December 10th, but he’s made it abundantly clear that he wants no part of fighting Maidana again after taking a terrible beating from him last year in December.

Khan instead is interested in facing Maidana’s recent victim Erik Morales, 35, who is clearly on the downside of his career. Morales is fighting for the vacant WBC light welterweight title on September 17th against Lucas Matthysse, and he’ll likely lose that fight unless he can get a questionable decision. Khan probably won’t want to fight Matthysse, though, because he can punch.

But Maidana still won’t get the fight with Khan because the British fighter will then most likely fight his IBF light welterweight mandatory, Lamont Peterson, who can’t punch. If Maidana can’t get a rematch his adviser Sebastian Contursi told ESPN that Maidana would take a rematch with Erik Morales or Timothy Bradley if he wants to fight.

Maidana beat Morales by a 12 round decision in April, and Morales has been making a lot of noise about wanting a rematch ever since. I can’t see the outcome being any different because Morales just doesn’t throw enough punches to beat a guy like Maidana. If anything, the fight will be will one-sided with Morales taking another beating. He looked terrible after the fight with Maidana last time. I can only imagine how bad he’ll look in a rematch.

Khan seems to be looking for the soft route before moving up in weight next year. Boxing fans want to see Khan fight Maidana or Briedis Prescott again, but Khan seems to be mainly interested in the old guy Morales, who is fighting several divisions above his best weight and isn’t the same fighter he once was.

Maidana likely will get none of those guys to fight him anytime soon if ever. Maidana is fighting on September 16th in Argentina and he’s looking to get the best possible opponent to fill that date with him. His previously scheduled opponent for August 27th, Robert Guerrero, badly injured his left shoulder and will be out for some time. This is more than a little disappointing for Maidana, because he wanted to beat Guerrero and use the victory to put more pressure on Khan to fight him again. Now Maidana will have to settle for a likely bottom feeder for his September fight and that’s not going to be enough to get boxing fans to pressure Khan to take the Maidana fight.

Chavez Jr. to be without Ariza and Roach during training camp for Hearns fight

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be going it alone for the most part after his trainer Alex Ariza reportedly refused to travel to Mexico to train Chavez Jr. for his September 17th fight against fringe contender Ronald Hearns (26-2, 20 KO’s) at the Palenque, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Chavez Jr. was supposed to travel to Los Angeles, California to train with Ariza, but changed his mind and decided to train in Mexico instead. Ariza doesn’t want to go to Mexico to train Chavez Jr., and has told him if he wants to train he’s going to have to come to Los Angeles. As such, Chavez Jr. will be without both Ariza and trainer Freddie Roach in getting ready for the Hearns fight.

In truth, Chavez Jr. probably doesn’t need either Ariza or Roach to beat a guy like Hearns. Chavez wins this fight on size alone, especially if he comes out there weighing a huge 180 pounds the night of the fight. The skinny Hearns won’t be able to deal with a light heavyweight-sized Chavez Jr. and will get broken down fairly quickly.

Top Rank and Roach are both against Chavez Jr. taking the Hearns fight because Roach doesn’t have time to train him because of his commitment to Manny Pacquiao, who is training for his November fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. Chavez Jr. has a fight scheduled already against Peter Manfredo Jr. on November 19th, and that’s the fight that Roach and Top Rank don’t want Chavez Jr. to blow by suffering any potential injuries during the Hearns bout. Roach has time to train Chavez Jr. for that fight but not the Hearns bout.

But in fairness to Chavez, he knows himself pretty well and likely is aware how much of an affect Ariza and Roach have on him during his training camp. I don’t think he’s worried too much about the lack of a coach because he’s got his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and plenty of other guys that can help him get ready for the Hearns fight.

I think he’s doing the right thing by taking the Hearns fight because Chavez Jr. needs as many fights as possible to get more experience and to keep improving as a fighter. He can’t be just sitting waiting on Roach and slowing his own career down. If nothing else, Chavez Jr. needs to milk his WBC title as much as possible because he likely won’t have it too much longer. Someone is going to beat him when he eventually is forced to step it up against a fighter like Marco Antonio Rubio or Sergio Martinez. While I think Ariza and Roach are good trainers, I think they’re other guys just as good if not better than both of them. Chavez Jr. doesn’t need them to succeed against Hearns. If Roach was as great as a lot of people think he is how come Chavez Jr. looked so mediocre against Sebastian Zbik? That was Roach who trained Chavez Jr. for that fight and he still looked bad.

I think that both Margarito and Cotto are done as far as being top fighters. But I think that Margarito has more in the tank then Cotto. Plus Margarito owns Cotto's soul by taking that '0' away.

Breaking news: Guerrero to have arthroscopic surgery on shoulder
by Lem Satterfield
Aug 24th, 2011

Robert Guerrero will receive arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair a torn tendon in the rotator cuff of his left shoulder, the fighter told Ring tv .com.

The decision was made after a 90-minute examination that included a second MRI by Dr. Michael Dillingham, who told Guerrero that he must refrain from even light exercise for four weeks and will be out of the ring for as long as six months.

Dillingham is the team physician for the San Francisco 49ers.

Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 knockouts) had been preparing to face Marcos Maidana for what the WBA calls its "regular" title on Aug. 27 but had to pull out after he injured the shoulder throwing a punch during sparring.
