Froch: Ward isn’t as fast as Andre Dirrell, and I easily beat Dirrell

y Scott Gilfoid: Photo: Casino/Showtime – WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) carried himself with class and dignity at the London press conference with WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) to promote their Super Six finals fight on October 29th. While Froch was unleashing with both barrels on Ward verbally, Ward sat there bravely, taking Froch’s barbs without firing back.

I really respect Ward for showing so much restraint because they would have had to pull me off of Froch if it had been me in their on that podium. I would have gone berserk and tore into Froch tooth and nail rather than being humiliated in front of the large crowd.

Here’s what Froch said “I have not been impressed with Andre and his level of opposition. Look at is record. He’s fought good fighters but not at the level where we are now. The only opponent that is up there on his record is Mikkel Kessler. And I watched that fight. I didn’t care for it, to be honest. I didn’t like that Mikkel had to travel with this title only to have Andre throwing his head in there, causing the cuts and such…I am not worried about Ward. He has no power whatsoever. And his hand speed, sure it’s fast, but even he’ll tell you it’s not as fast as Andre Dirrell’s. And I handled Dirrell quite easily.”

Can you believe that? Froch handling Dirrell? No way! Froch lost that fight or should have lost it. I’ve never seen such a terrible decision in my life. I had Dirrell winning 8 rounds to 3 with 1 even. It was a total mismatch with Dirrell schooling Froch and then getting the business. The fight took place in Froch’s home city of Nottingham, England, and it looked like a hometown decision to me. Showtime saw Dirrell winning, and many of the fans from both the U.S and England had Dirrell winning. Froch should have a loss on his record for that fight but instead a gift.

Ward totally dominated Kessler from start to finish, beating Kessler even easier than Dirrell beat Froch. It was a total schooling and the the couple of head butts that occurred had no bearing to the outcome of the fight. I see that as just as an excuse for Kessler fans not wanting to come to terms with the reality that he got beaten and broken down by Ward. Froch is kidding himself if he believes that Ward won because of the head butts. He won because of his amazing talent, just as he’ll whip Froch on October 29th because of his talent.

Mosley to fight Berto

By Eric Thomas: 39-year-old former three division world champion Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) could be soon facing Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KO’s) in the near future if Berto gets by IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 KO’s) on September 3rd, according to the latest boxing news.

There’s talk that this could be the next fight for the 27-year-old Berto if he comes out on top and captured the IBF title against Zaveck. To be sure, Mosley might also figure in the plans for Amir Khan, who his Golden Boy Promotions team have already said that Khan will be fighting a well known former world champion when Khan moves up in weight next year to the welterweight division.

That you would think would be Mosley. Berto will have to beat Khan to a fight against Mosley if he wants that fight. Mosley will be turning 40 next month on September 7th, and he hasn’t won a sight in two years since he beat Antonio Margarito in January 2009. Mosley lost his last bout to Manny Pacquiao last May, and in his fight before that he fought to a 12 round draw with Sergio Mora. And last year, Mosley was easily beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2010.

Mosley has looked terrible in all three fights and appears to be a washed up fighter. However, that likely won’t prevent Berto and/or Khan from taking on Mosley to add his famous name to their resumes at the same time getting a decent payday along with it. Mosley has the name but without the danger that he brought in his prime years 10 years ago.

Maidana could fight in September in a stay busy fight

By Eric Thomas: WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) could be fighting in mid-September in his home country of Argentina in a stay busy fight, according to the latest boxing news. Maidana, 28, was supposed to be fighting Robert Guerrero on August 27th, but Guerrero tore a tendon in his rotator cuff last week, and has had to cancel the important fight.

Maidana and his promoters from Golden Boy have attempted to find a replacement for the August 27th date, but haven’t had any luck. Maidana now is looking to get someone for mid-September. Don’t expect much in the way of quality again. This will likely be just an opponent that Maidana can blast around and get some rounds in while he waits to take on the September 10th winner between Breidis Prescott vs. Paul McCloskey in the WBA light welterweight title eliminator in Belfast, Ireland.

Ideally, Maidana would love to fight WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan, who beat Maidana last year in an exciting fight. However, that’s a long shot at best, because Khan and his promoters don’t seem eager to tangle with Maidana again. It may be that Maidana could be someone that Khan could possibly fight in the future but don’t bet on that. Khan would have fought him already if he were really interested in another hard fight.

Mayweather admits to ring rust in preparing for Ortiz

By Chris Williams: A very open Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) openly admits that he suffered from some ring rustiness when he started training camp recently to get prepared for a September 17th fight against World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s). Mayweather hasn’t fought since beating Shane Mosley by a 12 round decision last May.

It’s understandable then that the 34-year-old Mayweather would have a little rust. After all, he’s only fought three times in the past four years. Normal fighters who make a lot less money than Mayweather generally would be expected to fight 12 to 16 times in the same amount of time. That’s one of the advantages of being Mayweather. He gets so much money each time out that he doesn’t need to fight as often as other fighters. Mayweather doesn’t have to give his promoter a huge cut that some other fighters do, because Mayweather is clever.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Mayweather said “When I first got to the gym, I admit I was not as sharp as I want to be. But everyone says now that I’m as sharp as a razor. I’m feeling fast, and I have some good sparring partners in here. They’re not pushing me around, and I’m getting top notch work.”

That’s not good news for Ortiz. He’s going to have a lot of problems with Mayweather’s supreme boxing ability, and amazing hand speed. If Ortiz thinks he’s going to bulldoze Mayweather the same way he did with Andre Berto in his last fight he’s got another thing coming. Mayweather is going to make Ortiz look worse than Marcos Maidana did when he stopped Ortiz in 2009.

Tavoris Cloud-Jean Pascal Still A Real Possibility For December 17th - Pascal’s Promoter Says No Way Is His Man Scared


By James Slater: For a while now, there have been ongoing negotiations regarding the making of a Tavoris Cloud-Jean Pascal light-heavyweight clash. The bout is in the works for December 17th, with Quebec, Canada being the likely venue. However, as has been revealed on Ringtv.com, Al Bonani, trainer of unbeaten IBF champ Cloud, has expressed concern that Pascal may be reluctant to take the fight.

In another piece on the official web site of The Bible Of Boxing, Yvon Michel, promoter of Pascal, made it clear that in no way is the former light-heavyweight champion of the world scared of Cloud.

“Contrary to what Al Bonani says, Jean Pascal wants to fight Tavoris Cloud,” Michel said. “He’s not afraid of anybody. Although Cloud has a belt around him, he hasn’t got the stature of Jean Pascal. If you look at Pascal’s resume, he has fought much higher quality of opponents than Cloud has.”

It’s true that Pascal has been in with a true great in Bernard Hopkins, and a possible future great in Carl Froch - but Pascal lost to both men (whilst also picking up a controversial draw with B-Hop). To date, the 11th-round TD win he scored over Chad Dawson remains Pascal’s best win. But, though Cloud may not have Pascal’s overall experience, he has earned hugely useful wins himself - over the likes of Glen Johnson, Julio Cesar Gonzalez and Clinton Woods. And 29-year-old Cloud, 23-0(19), as the saying goes, doesn’t know HOW to lose. As physically and mentally strong as he is, the Floridian could well prove to be the returning Pascal’s worst nightmare.

Badly needing a win as he is after those two embarrassing nights with “The Executioner,” 28-year-old Pascal, 26-2-1(16) will deserve many plaudits if he indeed agrees to get it on with someone as tough as Cloud in his return. If this fight does come off, the real winners will be the fans, however.

Both men have an exciting, pleasing style (Pascal’s two encounters with B-Hop aside; due to how Hopkins refused to fight Pascal’s fight), and if matched together the leather would surely fly in a major way. Pascal has already given us one absolute classic, with his points loss to Froch. That fight was sensational, and Pascal-Cloud could turn out to be as good.

Neither guy has ever been stopped, and neither guy is a great pure boxer; both men instead being equipped to rumble. The war would be on on December 17th, that’s for sure.

HBO and the teams of both fighters are in talks: let’s hope the fight is made.

Donaire vs Narvarez Approved By HBO, Says Rivero

According to Osvaldo Rivero, promoter for WBO super flyweight champion Omar Narvaez, HBO has approved his boxer as the opponent for WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire. The fight is locked in for October 22nd, likely at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, but Rivero says there is still a chance the fight could take place in Las Vegas.

Narvaez (35-0-2, 19KOs) will return after winning a unanimous decision over Colombian William Urina on June 11 at Luna Park. He suffered a left hand injury during the fight, but told his promoter the injury has fully healed. Donaire (26-1-0, 18KO) comes back from the stunning second round knockout of Fernando "KOchulito" Montiel on February 19 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Judah Files Protest - Requests Rematch With Khan

Zab "Super" Judah has filed a protest with the Nevada Athletic Commission and has also sent letters to both the WBA and the IBF requesting that those organizations order a rematch with Amir Khan.

According to the protest letter, Judah's requests are predicated upon the inappropriate actions of the referee, who was clearly not in a position to see the low blow administered by Khan which ended the fight, as well as the referee's reluctance to sanction Khan for repetitious hitting behind the head and holding Judah down throughout the bout.

A copy of the letter that was sent to the WBA, as well as the IBF and the Nevada Athletic Commission outlining the details of Khan's infractions, is attached, along with a link to the video tape illustrating the repeated fouls, is attached.

Bill Halkias, Super Judah Promotions, "We know Zab was behind on the scores cards but there are numerous examples in boxing history where boxers that were behind came back with a knockout. The fact that Zab was behind has no bearing on whether the low blow call was wrong. We still had seven more rounds to fight. Zab still could have won, but that opportunity was wrongfully taken away from him"

"Before making any judgments, I would ask everyone to take a look at the tape," Promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events, said. "The video doesn't lie."

Cotto still wants 150 pound catchweight for Margarito rematch

By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is still insistent on getting a 150 pound catchweight for his December 3rd rematch against Antonio Margarito. If that’s not enough, Cotto also wants Margarito to weigh no more than 160 pounds the morning of the fight, according to Steve Kim at maxboxing.com.

Kim said this on his twitter page: “Still no resolution to Marg-Cotto catch-weight, in addition to 150 pds, Cotto also wants a cap of 160-pds the morning after weigh-in.”

That sounds really bad like Cotto is trying to put things in his favor to ensure that he gets the win this time. It’s hard to understand the catchweight request given that Cotto has already fought twice at 154 without a catchweight handicap but all of a sudden he wants now for this fight. It makes you wonder whether Cotto is getting cold feet about this fight.

But to now add a cap of 160 pounds for morning of the fight, it’s a move that would seem designed to weaken Margarito. Does Cotto really need all of these advantages to beat a fighter as seemingly depleted as Margarito? I don’t think Margarito is much of a threat to Cotto now after the beatings he’s taken to Shane Mosley and Manny Pacquiao in the past two years.

It’s like Cotto is trying to tilt things in his favor for this fight when he really doesn’t need to. Cotto got badly beaten by Margarito three years ago in an 11th round TKO loss, but that was a long time ago. Margarito isn’t the same fighter he was back then and is coming off of eye surgery following his loss to Pacquiao. If Margarito agrees to all the things that Cotto is asking for he’s going to likely be weight drained for the fight and it won’t be a very interesting bout.

Margarito will make 150, but to ask him to make 160 the day of the fight is really pushing it. Margarito will likely re-hydrate to a little over 160, possibly 165 or so. But it’s pointless to even have a catchweight if Cotto is already the champion and has been fighting at this weight for over a year. I can sort of understand Manny Pacquiao’s requests for catchweights but not Cotto, not when he’s already the WBA champion. Why would a champion need a catchweight? Is he a junior middleweight champion or not? If Cotto needs a catchweight then it’s sad.

I agree if cotto wants to demand things from margarito I have no problem with. And he knows margarito has no other paydays out there...what is he gonna do rematch clottey? Fight some up and comer? He's got nothing.

I remember a few months back they met for the first time since their fight and margarito tried to shake his hand and cotto refused. He dislikes him

^^^ Didnt know he didnt shake his hand, i likes. I really like the idea of Cotto fighting him at 150. I said before that Sergios a bitch. Hes only trying to fight to the 2 elite fighters that hes way bigger then. He dont want it with Andre Ward.

The last two probably wouldn't be on PPV, but Cotto would get a nice $2 million+ payday.

I guess Margarito could possibly fight Martinez. It certainly wouldn't be a PPV though and I'm not sure what kind of money he'd get, plus it would be a vicious beating at this point of his career.
