12th Man flying high

The small plane towing a huge 12th Man flag didn't go unnoticed by the Seahawks players on the field at the VMAC after it circled the facility in mid-practice.

"It gave me some goose bumps and chills," said second-year linebacker Aaron Curry. "I'm really looking forward to just rockin' it from beginning to end Sunday. Nothing is like the season opener at home. I expect it to be extremely crazy in there. I expect it to be difficult for anybody to communicate, so it'll really come down to who makes the plays."

Carroll said he's eager to experience the full-bore of the Qwest Field roar.

"I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to being in the stadium with the whole 12th Man factor and the opportunity for our people to go crazy for the Seahawks," he said. "Of course we need to play well to really get them roused up and that's our goal, to get in there and play really good football.

"But to start this new season off and our time here in Seattle with this opportunity to meet the crowd and show for them is a really big deal to me. It's one of the great aspects of this program and I really want to thrill them with the way we play. We'll need 'em. Every team that wants to be a champion has got to play great at home. So hopefully we can get this thing off to a great start this week."

Qwest crazies help Seahawks' defense rise up

Before Sunday's game against the 49ers, Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu talked about how it was going to take 11 guys rallying to the ball to stop running back Frank Gore.

But make no mistake, the Seahawks had more than 11 players stepping up against San Francisco's offense in the season opener as the 12th Man once again rose to the fore in creating one of the better homefield advantages in pro sports.

The 49ers, playing with two rookie offensive linemen, went to a silent snap count all afternoon and it didn't take long for Seattle's defenders to figure out the timing of that scheme.

As a result, the aggressive Seahawks defense held Gore to 38 yards on 17 carries and harassed quarterback Alex Smith into a pair of crucial interceptions in a 31-6 blowout.

"The 12th Man was amazing," said second-year linebacker Aaron Curry, who spent much of the game in close pursuit of Smith. "Oh my goodness. You couldn't hear the guy next to you.

"They had to go on a silent count because they couldn't hear each other. That was the advantage we had today that allowed us to time up our blitzes and pressures because we knew when the ball was going to get snapped. You just get a feel for it because it wasn't going to be the cadence. Everybody was looking at the ball, so everybody moves at the same time."

The inability of the offensive line to fire out first helped Seattle control the line of scrimmage. Three times the 49ers moved inside the 6-yard line in the first half, with the end result a meager two field goals.

"This was a great first statement against the team a lot of people see as the best team in our division," said defensive tackle Colin Cole. "For us to come out and shut them out of the end zone and keep them low on the rushing category is a great tribute to our defense."

And Cole tipped his hat to the crowd as well.

"The 12th Man was rockin' and rollin'. It was the first game of the season and everybody was excited and into it," he said. "I felt it the entire game. They're definitely an added opponent when it comes to teams trying to run their offense and get things going momentum-wise.

"When guys are continually looking back trying to get their ears a little closer to hear what's going on, it takes away from their focus a little bit. It was good for us."

Carroll said he'd never heard anything quite like it.

"You think of the college game, but this was louder," he said. "This was crazier than places like that."

Of course, the Seahawks defense did it's part as well. Linebacker Lofa Tatupu said there is one very big difference in his team's run defense this season, his name being Red Bryant.

"We've got a 330-pound defensive end. That changes things up," Tatupu said. "And he's not just a big body, he's an athlete out there. I love having Big Red out there. It changes some things up and gives us a little more variety."

With Bryant, Cole and Brandon Mebane on the field, the Seahawks toss a trio of 320-pound plus athletes at the running game. Bryant also had a sack Sunday, showing some of the pass rush the club desperately needs.

And the big boys definitely had a part in the three goal-line stands in the first half.

"The great thing about everybody on our defense, we don't care where the ball is," Curry said. "We don't care about field position. Just give us an inch and we'll defend it. For us, every snap is the same. We don't care where the end zone is, we just go out and play full speed."

Tatupu, however, sounded well aware of where the ball was when he was backed up against the end zone.

"As a competitor, you thrive on those situations," he said. "If it was easy, everybody would do it. You've got to boss up, man up, and know it's time to go. Especially when they're threatening your zone."

In the end, the Seahawks surrendered just a pair of field goals while holding their arch-nemesis Gore to 2.2 yards per carry. This from a guy who'd put up more yards against Seattle than any other back in the NFL over the past five seasons, including games of 212 and 207 yards.

The only frustration was the number of times defenders came close to Smith while finishing with just two sacks by Bryant and Dexter Davis. But they had 11 hits on the quarterback, including four by Chris Clemons, three by Bryant and two by Curry.

"We had a lot of pressure on him," Curry said. "We all could have made plays and had more than two sacks. But pressure is good. It doesn't look as good on paper, but when you start getting after a quarterback and get him out of his comfort zone and he starts worrying about where you're coming from next, I think that's just as good as sacks.

"If you can get the quarterback antsy, he wants to get rid of the ball faster than he wants, then you get interceptions."

And on Sunday, the Seahawks converted two interceptions into 14 points, helping turn the tide of a game where the offense was sputtering.

Good first step?

"Not bad," said Tatupu. "But we've still got some things to do."

I remember the last time the Seahawks were in Denver, I was at the game. We won with a last minute Josh Brown field goal. It was awesome, I was super hammered and talking shit to everybody I could, I don't know how I got out of there without getting my ass kicked, lol.

Hawks have a pretty bad road record over the last 6 years. And i dont think the Hawks score from this last week reflects who we really are as a team. We struggled mightily in the run game (less than 50 yards rushing) and the 9ers actually outgained us as a whole.

Not to mention, Unger is out...and our OL is crappy enough as it is.

Eh Most Broncos fans understand shit talking and dont take it personal. I have seen many fights in the stadium and most have started when the OTHER teams fans cant take a good shit talking too and start it. Denvers a football town, we have had our share of shit talking times and times where we were shit talked too, comes with the game. I think for the most part (i may be biased though) Denver is a great place to watch a game if you are a visiting teams fan.

just seen the news on Unger! if Denver cannot get a pass rush going this game that speaks volumes for our lack of one for the whole season. Still Starting our cast off Polumbus?

Edit: I wasn't asking how to kill myself, I asked how everybody would kill themself. But yeah, I did make a thread or two talking about offing myself. Meh....I'm a depressed person, and when I used to sit here on siccness all night and get blacked out drunk, especially after losing a girlfriend or something, suicide would usually come in to play. It has for most of my life. Not proud of it, but it happened.
