I agree man, I don't like Marquez above 135 and fighting pac at 147 at this point is just stupid on his part. Marquez vs Katsidis would be a great fight and one he should win. I don't know how much longer he wants to box but if he wants another "money" fight before retiring then he could fight Khan at 140. If not, just stay at 135 and rule the division for another year or two.

I think the Hatton fight is intriguing, if Ricky can lose 50 lbs and get down around 140. LOL Morales is almost in the same boat (if it doesn't capsize lol), but I think that's a HUUUGE step DOWN for Marquez, at this point in his career, to take.

Also, what's up with the Rafa Marquez/JuanMa Lopez fight being postponed. That sucks...I'm really looking forward to that fight.

I don't think anyone knows if ricky hatton will return or not, but if he does, I think it would make the most sense for hatton to fight amir khan in England which would be a massive event there.

Morales? hehe I suppose he could take that fight but like you said it's a step down for marquez, Morales is a shot fighter. Still good enough to beat journeymen but I think he'd get KO'd by any elite fighter like Marquez, but I'm sure it would sell good so who knows.

Yeah Rafa Marquez/JuanMa was postponed due to an injury marquez suffered. Apparently he slammed his car door on his thumb or something like that, but apparently it will still happen just a few weeks later.

Schaefer Says: 'Hopkins Has Accepted Pascal's Challenge'

If WBC/IBO light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal is looking for a fight, he may have found one in the form of Bernard Hopkins. On August 14, Pascal won an eleven round technical decision over the fighter most experts considered as the top 175-pounder in the world, Chad Dawson. Folowing that win, Pascal called out several names - including Hopkins.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has discussed the fight with Pascal's promoter, GYM. Schaefer says Hopkins is ready to make the fight, and willing to travel to Pascal's hometown of Montreal.

"Pascal called out Bernard Hopkins and I talked to Bernard and Bernard will be glad to oblige and is accepting the challenge. So, I have had a couple of conversations with Don Majeski, the agent for Jean Pascal and so I said, 'Look Bernard is ready, willing and able,'" said Schaefer.

"It's a matter of just packing the bags, and we're ready to travel and go to Canada. Bernard is ready to show it to a young guy again. They call Jean Pascal the king of the light heavweights because he beat Chad Dawson, but I think the king of the light heavyweights is Bernard Hopkins, and he's ready and willing and able to go."

Dana White thinks Mayweather doesn’t want the Pacquiao fight because of the difficult

By Chris Williams: For what it’s worth, UFC president Dana White thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t want the bout against Manny Pacquiao because of how difficult the Filipino star would be because of his fast hand speed and power. In an interview with Fighthype.com, White said “Floyd is used to fighting these guys where he can counter punch and he’s so fast that when they try to hit him, he hits them. He moves around and does his thing. Pacquiao is so f**king dangerous because he’s so fast, he hits hard too and he throws his best punches while he’s getting hit. I think it’s a very dangerous fight for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and I think Floyd knows that and I don’t think Floyd is too crazy about this fight.”


I disagree with White. I think Mayweather has no problem with fighting Pacquiao, as long the Filipino fighter takes the full random blood tests that Mayweather has been requesting. That’s the major thing. Pacquiao has been giving Mayweather resistance on this in the past and that’s caused one fight already to go up in smoke. Had Pacquiao agreed to a 14 day cutoff that Mayweather wanted during their first negotiation attempt in January, they would have already fought. Instead, Pacquiao stood firm at 24 day cut off for the drug testing, which is a huge amount of time between tests. The other thing that Mayweather obviously will want is the bigger cut of the revenue.

With Pacquiao getting smaller numbers than Mayweather in his pay per view bouts recently, Pacquiao isn’t in a good position to be asking for a 50-50 deal. Manny is going to have to come down a lot lower than 50-50 if he wants to take on a hugely popular fighter like Mayweather. Floyd is like a marketing machine when it comes to selling a fight. There’s probably no one better than him in any sport. I think Pacquiao his promoter can make this fight with Mayweather happen immediately if they were to agree to the full random blood tests and a 60-40 deal with Mayweather.

But if Arum keeps putting Pacquiao in with less than popular fighters from his Top Rank stable, that number may need to come down even lower because Pacquiao’s fights might start tanking in terms of PPV buys. We already saw a dramatic fall from the 1 million buys that Pacquiao got with the Cotto fight to only 700,000 for his fight against Joshua Clottey in March. If I was a promoter, that’s a fight that I would not have made for Pacquiao. I would have seen the likelihood of this match-up not doing well on PPV and in turn the lower numbers would have on negotiations with Mayweather

Does Chavez Jr. deserve a title shot against Cotto?

By Chris Williams: I’m still trying to figure out what Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) has done to deserve a title shot against World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s). Other than the fact that both Chavez Jr. and Cotto fight for Top Rank and promoter Bob Arum likes to match his fighters up against each other, I don’t see what Chavez has done to get this shot against Cotto. After fighting as a pro for seven years against B level opposition, Chavez, who was already ranked number #1 by the World Boxing Council in the middleweight division, beat fringe middleweight contender John Duddy by a 12 round unanimous decision last June.


Duddy is a decent middleweight, but he had already been beaten by fringe contender Billy Lyell in the previous year and hadn’t done much since then to prove himself. Chavez clearly dominated Duddy in their fight on June 26th, but Duddy had Chavez hurt on a couple of occasions in that fight with some shots. Duddy isn’t a big puncher, and yet he had Chavez hurt. I would have liked to have seen a higher ranked and more proven contender put in with Cotto rather than Chavez at this point. If Duddy is the only real opponent that Chavez Jr. has to show for himself after seven years as a pro, I think he’s not qualified as of yet for a title shot against Cotto.

That’s like throwing an underdeveloped fighter in with a pro. Chavez isn’t ready and won’t be ready to deal with Cotto by December 4th, which is when they’ll be fighting. It doesn’t matter that Chavez Jr. will be Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner as Manny prepares for Antonio Margarito. Chavez needs a lot more seasoning and his trainer Freddie Roach won’t be able to work miracles in that short of a time frame. I think this goes beyond just experience, though.

I think Chavez just won’t ever be in the same league as a fighter like Cotto and other top guys in the junior middleweight and middleweight divisions. That’s the ways thing are. You can have the perfect trainer, tons of experience and train like an animal and still not be talented enough to beat the top guys. I have a lot of respect for Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. as a fighter, but I don’t see the same talent in his son. And I don’t think he’s going to develop that talent by December 4th. This is going to be a massacre unless Cotto takes it easy on Chavez and carries him for 12 rounds.

Even then, Chavez Jr. is probably going to take a royal pounding by Cotto. I would much rather see Cotto face a higher ranked contender in his own division like Anthony Mundine, Vanes Martiorsyan or Pawel Wolak. I think those fights would be far more interesting and competitive than Chavez-Cotto. That fight has mismatch written all over it, and I can’t see this fight as a pay per view fight.

Bute waiting to fight Super Six winner, Pascal not in the cards right now

By Jason Kim: According to an interview of International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Lucian Bute’s promoter by Fightnews.com, Bute won’t be fighting WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal anytime soon. Jean Bedard, from Interbox, says that Bute (26-0, 21 KO’s) instead will wait on fighting the winner of the Super Six tournament in 2012. In the meantime, the 30-year-old Bute has a title defense coming up against little known contender Jesse Brinkley (35-5, 22 KO’s) on October 15th, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.


And provided that Bute wins that fight, which is highly likely given Brinkley’s past defeats to Sergio Mora, Alfonzo Gomez, Joe Spina and Robin Reid, Bute will then be directed into a super middleweight unification bout against either WBA champion Dimitri Sartison (27-1, 17 KO’s) or WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (38-2, 23 KO’). And then later on next year, Bute will then be put in with one of the four losers of the Super Six tournament, possibly Arthur Abraham or Mikkel Kessler. It sounds like a good idea.

Any one of those fights would be great for Bute. He might have problems against Pascal because of Jean’s hand speed and International Boxing Federation light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud might have too much power for Bute to handle. Although Bute would likely out-box Cloud for most of the fight, all it would take is one big shot from Cloud and Bute could find himself hurt and staggering around like he was in his controversial 12 round decision win over Librado Andrade in 2008.

Both Cloud and Pascal hit harder than Andrade and have better hand speed. It makes sense for Bute to be directed against guys like Stieglitz, Sartison, Kessler and Abraham instead. Those are fights that Bute can likely win, although the Kessler and Abraham fights would likely prove to be tough ones for him. Pascal needs to focus on taking on an older fighter like Bernard Hopkins and then fighting a rematch with Chad Dawson. Those are fights that Pascal would do well in and get paid well. If after Bute has taken on all of the mentioned opponent, perhaps he and Pascal can fight in 2012 if Bute hasn’t already been beaten by someone like Andre Ward or Andre Dirrell. A match between Pascal and Bute would still be a great fight even if Bute gets beaten by the Super Six tournament winner.

David Haye Fires: "Shut The F**k Up Fraudley Harrison"

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye has returned fire after reading Audley Harrison's latest release. The promoters for Harrison and Haye are in talks for an all-British mega-fight on November 13. Harrison has promised to break Haye up when they meet.

“I'm about as bored as every other fight fan about hearing why you won't accept fights. What are we in this game for? I say to try and win titles and create a legacy but if it's money you want then outside of the Klitschko fight I'm the only guy that makes you money. I am accepting the terms you have offered me and now we will see what you are made of. Man up and get this fight signed," Harrison said. "So bring on the Battle of Britain and I will be the Hayebreaker come November 13."

Haye fired back on his personal twitter page, telling Harrison to keep his mouth shut because the fight is going to cost him a lot - in medical bills.

"Shut the f**k up Fraudley. If some how we ever do fight, that career high pay day you crave won't cover your medical bills! Pipe down," Haye said.

Cotto's Shoulder Surgery To Prevent Chavez Jr. Fight?

Last month, WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, which could prevent a possible fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on December 4. Gabriel Peñagaricano, Cotto's lawyer, said the surgery should not alter their plans for a Chavez fight at the end of the year.

"Regarding his plans, he wants to fight later this year. It will not affect him. It will not alter plans," said Peñagaricano to Fernando Reyes.

But at a recent Boxeo Boricua press conference in Puerto Rico, Cotto told a reporter that because of the shoulder surgery, he may not be able to start training until November. The training delay has not been confirmed.

Peñagaricano was reached for comment and appears confident that Cotto's plan to fight in December will not be affected.

"We have had preliminary discussions. We talked about fighting at the end of the year and discussed a few options for opponents. Chavez is one of them," insisted Peñagaricano.

Abraham vs Froch Could Have Kessler's WBC Title at Stake

As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler has withdrawn from the Super Six tournament with an eye injury. Kessler could be out of action until the middle of next year. He was advised by a physician to rest for a period of up to nine months. He was going to face Allan Green on September 25.

The Super Six tournament is now in the third stage of fights, which makes it unlikley for another boxer to replace Kessler. It leaves Green in a bad situation because he doesn't have any points. He entered the tournament in the second stage, replacing Jermain Taylor, and lost his Super Six debut against Andre Ward.

BoxingScene has been in touch with Chris Meyer, General Manager for Sauerland Event, who promote Kessler. Based on what we've been told, it's a "likely scenario" that Kessler will vacate his WBC title - and the upcoming Super Six fight, between Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch, will have the vacant title at stake.

Abraham-Froch is scheduled to take place on October 2. Andre Dirrell is the number one ranked contender under the WBC, but he is scheduled to face WBA champion Andre Ward in the third stage of the Super Six. Since Dirrell is unavailable, it leaves Froch, who is ranked at number two, and Abraham, who is ranked at number three, to fight for the title.

Kessler Says: I Will Fight The Super Six Champion in 2011

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Team Sauerland regrets to inform the boxing world that WBC Super Middleweight Champion Mikkel Kessler has been forced to pull out of the Super Six World Boxing Classic due to an eye injury. His title defence against Allan Green in Herning, Denmark on September 25 has been cancelled.

“This is the most disappointing moment of my boxing career,” Kessler said. “After defeating Carl Froch, I was on the way to win the tournament, so pulling out now really hurts. The eye problem has bothered me since the beginning of the Super Six in my preparation for the bout against Andre Ward. It also bothered me in the fights against Ward and Froch, and in my training for the fight against Green it has become unbearable. I have consulted leading experts in Denmark and Germany and they have advised me to take a break from boxing so that the problem can heal. I have been assured that it will heal completely and that I will be back in the ring next year. As a fair sportsman, I do not want to delay the Super Six, which is still the best thing that has happened to boxing for a long time. I wish my fellow contestants the best of luck - may the best man win. I will be there to fight the winner in 2011.”

SHOWTIME Sports Executive Vice President Ken Hershman expresses his disappointment for Kessler but assures the boxing fans around the world that the tournament will go on.

“I commend Mikkel Kessler for his decision,” said Hershman. “He has made a wise choice in light of his doctors’ recommendations and he is showing tremendous respect for his fellow competitors and for the tournament format itself.

“We will publicly address how this turn of events affects the tournament in the coming days. I assure you we will make the best of this scenario. In fact, I have been aware of Mikkel’s situation for a few days and I have a vision for how we can proceed that will enhance the excitement of the tournament. First, I must have some internal discussions but mark my words, the drama of the Super Six will be unrelenting and we will crown a champion in the early part of 2011.”

Promoter Kalle Sauerland said Kessler did “absolutely the right thing.” He stated: “You can recover from losing in the ring but you cannot recover from losing your health. There is nothing that is of bigger importance than the boxer´s health. As much as we regret to see Mikkel pulling out, he was left with no other choice. He should take all the time in the world to recover. He can take comfort in the fact that he looked reborn in his last bout. Once he is recovered, he will continue where he left off. The Viking Warrior will be back.”

Added Team Sauerland General Manager Chris Meyer. “We are saddened to see Mikkel pulling out but his health is more important than anything he could win inside the ring. The WBC will probably make him “champion emeritus” so that he can fight against the reigning champion once he is ready to come back.”

Highly-reputed eye specialist Professor Dr. med Gerhard Lang, who is the Director of the Eye Hospital at Universitätsklinikum Ulm and also served as the 2010 World Ophthalmology Congress President, examined Kessler and believes a proper rest is all the “Viking Warrior” needs.

“Mikkel said he has been bothered by problems with his vision during the fights against Ward and Froch as well as in the training in the build-up to these fights. There is a weakness of the superior oblique muscle of his left eye. To continue boxing, the muscle needs a proper rest, meaning no fighting or sparring for nine months. After this break, a complete recovery is expected.”

Jean Pascal Shreds Lucian Bute, Targets Hopkins Clash

WBC/IBO light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (25-1, 16 KOs) is not going to chase a fight with fellow Canadian, IBF super middleweight king Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 knockouts). After winning a decision over the man most experts considered as the 175-pounder in the world, Chad Dawson, the new unified champion is looking for the best and biggest fights possible.

The biggest financial opportunity would be a hometown showdown with Bute. The fight won't happen any time soon. Bute's promoter, InterBox, advised Pascal's handlers that their fighter has no interest in moving up to light heavyweight. They said Bute will continue to make fights at 168-pounds. Pascal would like to fight him now, but says it's not a mandatory need. The way he sees it, Bute is the one who really needs their fight.

"I would like to fight Lucian Bute. But I don't need to chase Lucian Bute, because I'm the boss in town. I'm the king of my division right now. I beat one of the best fighters, pound-for-pound, in the world. And, you know, that was kind of funny. Because Bute has said to the Montreal media that I was chasing him," Pascal said.

"Bute needs me because, right now, he's stuck with nobody. Even HBO doesn't want his fight. Not even Showtime. If he wants to fight on ESPN, he can take those easy fights like Jesse Brinkley and Jean Paul Mendy. But me, I know that without Bute, I can still make millions of dollars. So Bute, don't get me wrong, I don't need you. I don't chase you."

The likely opponent for Pascal, if the negotiations continue to play out, is veteran Bernard Hopkins. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has already spoken with Pascal's promoter, GYM, about Hopkins' willingness to take a fight with Pascal in Montreal.

"I would love to fight Bernard Hopkins. He has a lot of experience, he's a legend, and he has a big name, and he has good skills. That would be another great challenge for me. I just want to prove to myself that I deserve to be in the ring with a guy like that, and that I belong with the elite fighters in the world. Not only in my division, but among the best fighters, pound-for-pound," Pascal said.

Who will be Kessler’s replacement in the Super Six tournament?

By Scott Gilfoid: With World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler pulling out of the Super Six tournament today due to a severe eye injury, the tournament now needs an immediate replace as soon as possible so that American Allan Green has an opponent for next month. Green was supposed to be fighting Kessler on September 25th, but that fight is now canceled with Kessler’s eye injury. I had a feeling that Kessler wouldn’t have enough to make it through his next fight because he had taken a royal pounding against Andre Ward and to some extent in his fight against Carl Froch, which Kessler won by a 12 round decision on April 24th. Kessler’s eyes were badly swollen and cut up in both of his fights in the Super Six tournament and he no longer looked like the same dominating fighter he once was two years ago. He looked older, less powerful and slower.


Showtime needs to try and go after IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute to see if he’ll interested in replacing Kessler. I don’t think he will. I see Bute continuing to defend his title against the mediocre opposition that have been served up to him. Other than Kessler, there’s WBO super middleweight champion Roberto Stieglitz, the German based fighter. However, I think he would be a horrible replacement because I still can’t forget how badly he was dominated by LIbrade Andrade in the past, and I don’t want to see a punching bag replace Kessler. Russian Dimitri Sartison fights in the same stand up European style as Kessler, but he’s pretty basic and would be likely killed by Dirrell and Ward. I don’t like him either. Andrade’s no good because he doesn’t seem like the same fighter he once was in the first fight with Bute. I’m not interested in seeing Sakio Bika as a replacement. I think he would be a good fighter, but I think they need someone with better offensive skills than him.

Forget about Kelly Pavlik. He already said he would never fight in the Super Six tournament, saying “Let them beat each other up. Let them ruin their careers for peanuts.” Besides that, Pavlik would probably be destroyed by every fighter in the tournament.
