Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's first UFC title defense likely delayed by knee surgery

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Newly minted UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's first title defense likely will be delayed due to a recent knee surgery.

Rua (19-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC), who knocked out Lyoto Machida at UFC 113 to earn the 205-pound title, was expected to meet Rashad Evans later this year.

With Rua's window of recovery, UFC president Dana White is unsure when the Brazilian champ will fight again.

"He just got out of the hospital; it was a successful surgery," White said. "He had the surgery in [Los Angeles], and he's going to be doing all his therapy in (Las) Vegas.

"So he'll be in Vegas for the next five weeks."

White said Rua's injury occurred during the fight with Machida, though a report from ESPN's "MMA Live" the night of the May 8 event stated Rua's knee was already injured.

"He got hurt in the fight," White asserted.

The UFC president does not know which knee Rua injured.

The Brazilian superstar previously has struggled with knee injuries. He faced Forrest Griffin with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his octagon debut at UFC 76 and afterward underwent surgery to repair the damage. Less than six months later, he withdrew from a scheduled fight with Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 with the same injury and underwent another surgery.

Mousasi vs. O'Brien Expected for DREAM.15

A light heavyweight bout between Gegard Mousasi and UFC veteran Jake O'Brien is close to being finalized for DREAM.15, MMA Fighting has learned has learned from sources close to the event.

Both sides have verbally agreed to the fight, and barring any setbacks, contracts are expected to be signed shortly.

The fight is expected to be a part of the upcoming DREAM light heavyweight tournament, which will also feature an opening round bout between Melvin Manhoef and Tatsuya Mizuno.

DREAM.15 takes place July 10 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, and will be headlined by Shinya Aoki vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri for the DREAM lightweight title.

Mousasi is coming off a Strikeforce light heavyweight title loss to Muhammed Lawal in April. The loss marked his first since August 2006, a stretch which saw him win 15 straight fights. His current MMA record is 28-3-1.

O'Brien has won his last two fights in a row since being released by the UFC following his UFC 100 loss to Jon Jones last July. The 13-3 veteran's most notable win is a UFN 8 win over Heath Herring in January 2007.

Coker Eyeing Manhoef For Le's Spot In Middleweight Tourney

Another pound of dynamite could be added to Strikeforce's upcoming eight-man middleweight tournament.

Scott Coker, the promotion's CEO, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today that he plans to invite fearsome striker Melvin Manhoef (24-7-1 MMA, 0-1 SF) to the field, which is expected to begin Aug. 21 at "Strikeforce: Houston."

Coker added that former middleweight champion Cung Le (7-1 MMA, 7-1 SF) will not participate in the tourney and will stick to "superfights."

Manhoef, a K-1 and DREAM veteran, made his U.S. debut in January at "Strikeforce: Miami" and battered former EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler before he caught a punch that knocked him out cold in the first round.

The Amsterdam resident detests going the distance; only two of his 32 professional MMA fights have involved the judges. Despite the price his record pays for his wild style, he has won legions of fans stateside and overseas.

Manhoef next fights journeyman Tatsuya Mizuno at DREAM.15 on July 10.

As MMAjunkie.com previously reported, other tournament invitees include Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy, Dan Henderson and Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Additionally, the winner of an upcoming World Victory Road/Sengoku bout between Kazuo Misaki and champ Jorge Santiago is under consideration for the field.

Coker previously said that welterweight champion Nick Diaz is also targeted for the tournament, though it's unclear whether he will be able to participate due to a three-month suspension being served for his role in a brawl at "Strikeforce: Nashville." Miller's availability could also be affected because of the incident.

Le, who rematched and defeated Scott Smith earlier this month at "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum," initially was among the eight targeted tounrey fighters but later told MMAWeekly.com that he has no desire to compete in the tournament.

Coker said today that the shape of the tournament and number of events in which it will play out still are being decided.

Bisping Faces Either Akiyama or Belfort at UFC 120

Michael Bisping’s next opponent will be either Vitor Belfort or Yoshihiro Akiyama. The fight will take place at UFC 120, which is being staged at the O2 Arena in London on October 16th.

The news comes via Fighters Only and Daily Telegraph columnist Gareth Davies, who was told of the matchmaking by a very well-placed source.

Akiyama’s eligibility will be determined by his performance tonight against Chris Leben, with a loss most likely putting him out of the running for the October match. Akiyama was supposed to be fighting Wanderlei Silva tonight but Silva requires knee surgery and will be sidelined for some time.

Bisping would most likely have been rematching Wanderlei at UFC 120 had the Brazilian legend been fit, but there is no chance of seeing that fight until 2011 now. Their first fight in February ended with a decision for Silva but both he and Bisping have said they would like a rematch to conclusively settle things.

For Belfort the fight would be his first UFC appearance since stopping Rich Franklin at UFC 103 in September last year. He was suffering from an elbow injury at the time and had surgery shortly after the fight to correct the issue.

The surgery went well but Belfort has taken longer than expected to recover and was forced to miss a UFC 112 fight with Anderson Silva because of this. Belfort is on a five-fight winning run and is unbeaten since 2007. His win over Franklin was the first appearance of the new UFC contract he signed last year.

Nate Diaz signs new four-fight deal with UFC

Newly minted welterweight Nate Diaz (12-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) will re-up with the UFC for four more fights.

The fighter's manager, Cesar Gracie, today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the new contract will be finalized today.

Additionally, Diaz is signed to face Marcus Davis on the first televised bout of Aug. 28's UFC 118 in Boston. TD Garden, the city's revered sports arena, hosts the pay-per-view event.

Diaz made his welterweight debut in March at UFC 111 and stopped Rory Markham by first-round TKO. The win took the sting off a disappointing decision loss two months prior to lightweight Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 20, a fight considered to be a title eliminator for a shot at then-champion B.J. Penn.

In the days following the fight, Diaz took to the Internet to grumble about the judges' decision and display the lack of damage he sustained in the fight.

Afterward, Diaz told MMAjunkie.com that he was tired of year-round dieting and wanted to try his hand in both weight classes.

Following his stint on "TUF 5," Diaz went on a tear in the 155-pound division with five-straight wins before falling short on points to top-tier competitors Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson.

Davis (17-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC), meanwhile, recently returned to the winner's circle at UFC 113 with a second-round TKO of Jonathan Goulet, which reversed a two-fight slide to former contender Dan Hardy and Ben Saunders.

Diaz will undoubtedly play the heel when he fights the "Irish Hand Grenade" in Beantown.

The Return of The Korean Zombie At WEC 51

The Garv was just tipped off that Chan Sung Jung, a.k.a. "The Korean Zombie", will return to action against George Roop on September 30 for WEC 51 in Colorado.

Jung set the world on fire in a mutual massacre against slugger Leonard Garcia at WEC 48, where the pair disappeared in a hail of fists for all three rounds. Garcia walked away with a split decision victory that many felt "The Korean Zombie" should have won. Before his barnburner with Chan Sung Jung, Garcia fought to a draw with Roop earlier this at WEC 47 in March.

WEC 51 is expected to feature featherweight champion Jose Aldo taking on top contender Manny Gamburyan, but we've confirmed with Manny's camp that the fight is not yet signed.
