According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, there is a "zero percent" chance the 49ers will trade for Donovan McNabb and Brandon Marshall, as suggested by Herm Edwards.
Their coolness on Marshall is understandable, but this is exactly the sort of team that should be trying to land McNabb. With the Cardinals' personnel losses, the Niners are the early favorites in the NFC West despite an unreliable quarterback who still has trouble operating out of any formation but the shotgun. If they refuse to pursue a difference-maker like McNabb, they deserve their fate with Alex Smith.

The way I look at this signing is that the Niners front office believe in Alex but need to put some fire under his ass. Carr is just the right person to do this....he's been there and learned enough from Eli but isn't enough to knock him off his starting position. I know everyone here has his doubts about Alex (including me) but this is his 2nd REAL season so far....lets see where he can go and then judge. If he fails then lets look somewhere else or try Nate Davis but for now....cmon the guy is bearly 25 and knows our system/personel better than anyone else= he is better for the future. Yeah McNabb and Vick and (insert here) can win more now but will it help us 4-5 years down the road?, NO.

Well whether or not we suck with Alex now, remains to be seen.
I feel you though, there is a huge sense of urgency for the 9ers...especially with Warner out of the picture in the NFC West.
I'm not completely ready to throw Alex under the bus yet, I mean for the first time in his career he's got some type of consistency with the OC. We'll see this season.

So lets say McNabb was still available. You would rather have him for 2 more years while his productivity drops because he is learning a new system? Plus he was sacked 35 times compared to Smith's 22 this past year, so him coming here with our line would be even worse. Plus with Alex under the same system he has to improve, while McNabb would slightly drop due to a new system. McNabbs completion attempt % was 60.3 and Smith was at 60.5 last year, McNabb was the 12th rated passer, Smith was 19th, McNabb 22 TD-Smith 18....not too much of a drop off with Smith considering McNabb had more weapons, a solid line and has been running the same offense under Andy Reid for the past 11 years. Who says we are going to suck anyway?

I am probably not in the popular vote on this, but i like alex smith. I think he can get the job done. the past is the past. A full season with Crabtree catching the rock and V. Davis handling his business will give us a sturdy passing game. Hopefully the O-line is working their collective tails off this off season and we draft 2 position players who can help in the Kick return game and add a play maker. Or a solid o-lineman and we should compete and hopefully make the playoffs this year.
I agree with you on this one to a certain extent though..I'm still not a big believer of Smith, he might be standing up now and talking like a real QB...but this year is the year for him to prove me and many other 49ers fans that he is the truth and the QB that will lead the 49ers to the Playoffs and a superbowl.
If he doesn't take advantage of the firepower we have on the field and doesn't take us all the way, then 49ers need to start searching for a more reliable QB. And I'm not talking about David Carr, to me Carr is another Smith maybe worse!
We need a solid O-line, better pass rush and we also need a QB that can really back up Gore. Gore can not do it by himself when it comes down to running....Coffee? C'MON NOW SON! he's weak!

Andy Reid is a shitty coach and forced McNabb to throw more than any other team, which is what led to more sacks and also hurt some of his other stats.
i wasnt saying McNabb was the answer, and was questioning him for either Bay Area team. but until it happens, u really dont know. a different team, a different coach, a different system. anything could happen.
i do think Alex should be improved, but i dont think our Raye is the guy that will help him elevate to a championship level.
regardless of all this, like i said, we have what we have and its time to focus on the draft.
