“Let’s see how you like it,” said the vato, as he stepped out with a baseball bat walking towards me. I looked around again and knew that there was no way we were going to get out of this situation. I counted nine cholos with them. Just as they were all stepping out of their ranflas I heard a police sired.
“What’s going on!” yelled the cop as he quickly stepped out of his vehicle, hand on his stick.
“Nothing man, nothing.” Said one of the VSL vatos. They all quickly got back into their cars and drove off. Vince started his ranfla and we also drove off before the cops decided to mess with us again. I’m not going to lie. I was glad the pigs pulled up. Vince and I were down to fight, but I knew that this time they would have killed us. As bad as we beat up their homeboys the other day, I knew they wanted revenge.
“Look ese, they’re waiting to see which way we’re going.” I said as I saw both cars a few blocks away.
“Just jam back to Barrio Apache….at least we got a better chance to find some homeboys to back us up.”
“Chale! I’m going to my tio’s chante downtown. He has a shotgun. I’m going to kill them fools!”

I didn’t know what to think. I just knew that we were getting deeper and deeper into this mess. Vince punched the gas and went through a red light. The cars following close behind did the same and started gaining on us. We turned a sharp corner into an alley and through a parking lot. Just as we turned into his uncles driveway the other vatos pulled up behind us. Vince ran into the front door of his uncles house. There was no way of turning this situation around, so I figured the hell with it. I jumped out from my seat and yelled, “YOU GOT A PROBLEM, LET’S GO AT IT ONE ON ONE!”
I knew they weren’t going for it. They rushed me from all sides as I tried my hardest to punch my way out of it. I was getting kicked, punched and pushed when I heard the shots.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
I could hear the pellets fall everywhere as the buckshot came down. They stopped kicking me and looked up as Vince stood on his uncles porch with a sawed off twelve gauge shotgun shooting into the air.
“GET UP OUTTA HERE! DON’T YOU EVER TRY TO RUN UP ON ME!” said Vince as he now aimed the shotgun toward them. I could see the rage in his face.

“I’ll blast every single one of you chavalas!”
They all slowly stepped back and got into their ranflas. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know if they had any cuetes or not.
“We’ll get you punks. You better watch your back!” yelled one of the vatos from the passenger side window. They hit the gas and peeled off, throwing gang signs out of the window. We quickly locked up Vince’s ranfla and ran into the house. Vince hid the twelve gauge in the garage under a stack of old clothes. Then we quickly ran out of the back door toward the alley. We figured the cops would be coming anytime. There was an old pizza place a block away from the alley. It had an arcade upstairs where a lot of vatos hung out and played video games. It was always dark with an old jukebox. We made it just in time because as soon as we walked upstairs, we heard cop sirens pass by. Inside, there were vatos playing pool and games. We blended in. The police sirens kept passing down the street. We both looked at each other and tried ignoring the fact that the cops were after us. VSL was after us. I guess the whole world is after us.

That night I laid in bed thinking about how everything had escalated from one small incident into a big one. Never did I think that I would be in this situation. Vince and I weren’t new to gangbanging, but we never had to fight against vatos from our own town. I had a tio that was killed in the late fifties. He lived in Coolidge, a small town in Arizona. It was over a dice game. My father would tell me stories about his brother. He would tell me that he was a hardcore pachuco. He wouldn’t even carry a knife. He carried a big razor blade, ready to cut any vato across the stomach. Back then they wouldn’t try to stab you, they would slice you. It was a harder cut to heal, especially when your intestines were hanging out. My familia bloodline was involved in this Vida Loca even back then in those times. Tambien during the 70’s, my father’s primo was killed in Califas. Dying and murder was just a fact of life, whether us vatos liked it or not.
In our town the veteranos were proud of the fact that we all got along, so I wondered how they felt about our situation. I couldn’t stop thinking about what was going to happen. It would either blow over or get worse, and I just knew that there was no way it would simply blow over.

That night I dreamed about snakes. No matter which way I turned I saw snakes crawling over each other. I couldn’t get away. They seemed to fall from the sky. And each time I woke up covered with sweat, I would toss and turn, only to dream again of snakes.
I woke up to the sound of oldies when my alarm went off. I didn’t want to wake up. Chale, just to live another stressful day. I slowly got up and ironed my brown Dickies and black penelton. Taking a slow shower, dreading the fact of going to school. I looked into the mirror and made sure my hair was combed perfectly back. I put on my pano across the forehead. I heard Vince pull into my driveway as I was eating breakfast.
“Vince is outside,” said my mother as she watered the plants outside.
“OK.” I answered as I shoved the rest of the food into my mouth. I grabbed my pocket knife from the dresser in my room and walked out. Vince had his primo’s ’64. He was rolling a joint as I sat in the car.
“This is some good bud, homie. Big Ed must have a firme connect,” said Vince as he finished rolling the joint.
I didn’t say anything. I had never been into yesca. I was surprised that Vince was acting as if nothing was going on. He started the car and hit the switches and the car rose. We cruised straight to the high school. I actually felt like going to class today. But before we parked Vince decided to take a cruise around the school because it gave us a chance to see some of the homies and jainas. Just as we were about to park, I could see Chuey running toward us.

“It’s on vato! It’s on!” yelled Chuey as he reached us. I was confused because I knew that Chuey didn’t go to school. I figured the reason Chuey was even at the school was because sometimes he walked his lady.
“What are you talking about, bro?” asked Vince as he was getting out of the ’64.
“Them chavalas from VSL just jumped me,” said Chuey.
Now I looked at him and I noticed his face was scuffed up. His shirt was dirty and he had blood on his fists. Just then Big Ed pulled up with a car load of vatos from Barrio Apache. Big Ed jumped out from his car and ran toward Chuey to make sure he was ok. I had never seen Big Ed so pissed off before. I could see the hate in his eyes. He was acting as if he was the one who got jumped.
I know the feeling of having a good homeboy get hurt and you’re not there to back him up.
Big Ed looked toward us and said, “Let’s go.”
Chuey jumped into Big Ed’s car. Vince didn’t say a word as he sat back into his ranfla. I knew it was time to ride. We followed Big Ed toward the parking lot on the other side of the school.
As we turned toward the parking lot on the other side of the school I saw them. There were about fifteen vatos from VSL mean mugging us like they wanted to kill us. With no hesitation Big Ed jumped out of his ranfla and knocked the biggest vato out. He hit that vato so hard I could hear the solid impact from where I was standing.

“Yeah! Puro Barrio Apache!” yelled Big Ed as he hit another vato twice in the face. It seemed like time stopped as everyone just stood and watched in shock. Then as everyone realized what was happening, it started. Every single vato began throwing punches, kicks, garbage cans and anything else that could be thrown. I felt a hit from behind my head. I could feel warm blood running down my neck. I felt myself begin to fall when a homeboy helped me up. I shook it off and ran into the crowd fighting. It was the worst fight I had ever seen in my whole life. We had about eight homies with us. VSL had about fifteen vatos with them. Vatos were getting hit and kicked all around me. I saw Big Ed get hit with a stick. I saw Vince kicking a vato in the mouth. Before I knew it, gente from the school began jumping into the fight. I saw vatos and jainas boxing. Some were fighting with us some were fighting against us. I figured it was about thirty five people throwing blows. I saw one vato from VSL staggering next to me. I didn’t hesitate to hit him right on the side of his head with all my strength. It felt like slow motion when I saw him fall. I could hear some jainas screaming for us to stop.

“LET’S GO! Yelled Big Ed as he backed up from the fight. His shirt was ripped off and hanging from his waist. I could see Tobo getting kicked on the ground as four vatos from VSL surrounded him. Vince ran toward them and kicked one of the vatos in the mouth. It looked like an explosion of blood. I ran over to back up Vince and Tobo. People were running around all crazy not knowing where to go. I pushed a vato away from Tobo and began choking him. I wanted to kill this vato. I wanted to see him take his last breath. He was trying to pull my hands away with all of his strength. I could feel him getting weak. I felt someone tugging at me. I turned around and it was Vince with blood running down his face. Teachers were trying to break the fight up. I let the vato go as he turned over throwing up and coughing.
“I just called the cops!” yelled the white math teacher as he tried pulling two vatos apart. They were wrestling on the floor. I saw someone from VSL run behind the teacher and hit him in the back of the head. The teacher fell as some of the vatos began kicking the teacher. I could hear the teacher crying in pain. I hate that racist teacher anyways, I thought to myself. We ran back toward our ranflas and everybody was running in different directions. Some of the homies were carrying Tobo to Big Ed’s car. VSL began running into the school before the cops got there. They had all walked to school so they had no form of getting away. Vince peeled out and followed behind Big Ed.

Chapter 4

“Meet at my chante,” yelled Big Ed from his window as we drove toward Barrio Apache. We could hear police sirens coming closer as we took a side street. I was sweating with adrenaline just knowing that the cops were going to find us. I looked back toward the main street and saw all the police cars pass by. They were heading toward the high school.
“They just passed us by,” I said. We were packed seven deep. All vatos from Barrio Apache, vatos I knew growing up, some younger some older.
As we drove up to Big Ed’s chante I counted four parked cars in front of his house. Big Ed signaled for us to go inside quickly from his bedroom window. We all got out of the ranfla and quickly went into his pad. Big Ed’s Jefito’s were both at work and his sister went to college. The second I walked in I could see clouds of marijuana smoke. The smell of skunk bud hit me as I inhaled the air. As I walked into the back room everybody gave me hugs and Chicano handshakes. It seemed as if these gente had been here for hours, but they were involved in the fight at the school. Vatos were throwing punches into the air excitedly as they told each other about who they had hit. We even had girls in the house talking about how many vatos they had fought. Vince asked Big Ed for a towel so he could wipe the blood from his face. I could see Tobo laying down on an old mattress holding his leg. It looked really bad. I walked toward him and kneeled down. I asked, “Are you ok?”

“Simon ese, I’m ok. I think it’s only bruised and cut,” he answered.
“Are you sure it’s not broken?” I asked with rap music playing loud above our voices.
“I’ll be firme. I can still walk,” he answered. “It’s going to take more than some punks from VSL to keep me down, ese,” as he smiled. I stood back up as I gripped his shoulder. I shook his hand as if we had just won a deadly battle.
One of the homeboys named Spider ran in and said, “The cops are driving around outside! Everybody be quiet.”
Everybody instantly stopped talking as Big Ed turned his radio off. He walked to the front of his house to investigate whether the cops were just driving around or stopping there. They drove by the house and then drove off. They had no idea we had at least thirty heads in the house
