“Rappers have the voice of Oakland,” says Gully – but unlike most Oakland rappers, he wants to use his voice to inspire the community, rather than perpetrate the same cycle of violence and drug abuse. “Oakland is a good city and it’s not just what’s on the news. But you can’t avoid the violence either. One of my good friends just got shot three times, and I just realized, this isn’t working. I needed to make a change. We (the city of Oakland) need to make a change. ”

HM5 isn’t the first time Young Gully has addressed social issues – he solidified his reputation with 2010’sGrant Station project, an 11 track album dedicated to Oscar Grant, and has never been afraid to speak out against injustice, even on the first Hustla Movement mixtape.

The Hustla Movement series started in 2007, when Volume 1 (hosted by DJ Fresh of Tonite Show fame) was released on the streets of Oakland. 2009 saw the 2nd installment, and 2011 saw Volume 3 (hosted by DJ Faze of Digital Dripped) bring Young Gully’s buzz to critical mass, which led to him being named part ofThizzler.com’s Bay Area Freshmen 10 Class of 2011 and Volume 4 of the HM series, which was also hosted by Thizzler On The Roof.

The first 3 volumes of the Hustla Movement series can’t be found online anymore, but to celebrate the closing of the HM chapter, we’re rereleasing the whole series on a limited number of custom Hustla Movement USB driveswhich are available for purchase here.

Young Gully recently completed a tour in the Pacific Northwest, and also has a VEVO front page premierescheduled for April 17th for his music video “Talk 2 You” featuring Big Klef.
