David Marvin Blake Jr., son of legendary rapper and producer DJ Quik, has been convicted of second-degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle in connection with the 2022 killing of Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. The Los Angeles County jury delivered its verdict on December 4, 2025, marking a devastating chapter in one of West Coast hip-hop’s most influential families.

The charges stem from a violent confrontation on May 25, 2022, in Downey, California. Prosecutors stated that Cardoza was engaged in a fight with another man when Blake opened fire from a nearby car. Cardoza was struck multiple times and later died at the hospital.

Blake was arrested the following day in Porter Ranch, California. He was 31 at the time of the incident.

Jurors found Blake guilty of:

• Second-degree murder

• Shooting from a motor vehicle

They also upheld allegations of gun use and great bodily injury, which significantly increase sentencing severity. Blake now faces 40 years to life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for February 6, 2026.

Before the case, Blake known musically as D. Blake was carving out his own path in hip-hop. He appeared on DJ Quik’s 2014 album The Midnight Life and released solo tracks such as Official and Rollin featuring Kinglife Herb. His budding career was cut short by the events of May 2022, leaving fans to reflect on what might have been.
