OAKLAND -- An Oakland police officer was shot during a traffic stop late Friday night and one of the two suspects was later fatally wounded while hiding under a nearby porch, authorities said.
The incident began aroun 11 p.m. when a motorcycle officer on sideshow patrol pulled over a Camero or Firebird near the intersection of Parker and MacArthur. As he tried to take the driver into custody, shots rang out and the two suspects fled on foot.
The officer -- protected from serious injury by his protective vest -- called in for help. Officers immediately swarmed to the scene and an intense manhunt of local backyards was mounted.
One of the suspects was tracked to the 2600 block of Parker and was fatally wounded. The other suspect -- described as a white male -- remained at large early Saturday.
"We know who the suspect is," said Oakland police officer Lawrence Green.
The wounded officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Green said he had talked with the wounded officer and his wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.
