Report: LB Banta-Cain working out for Raiders today

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, September 8th, 2011 at 11:40 am in Oakland Raiders.

A report just surfaced about the Raiders working out veteran linebacker Tully Banta-Cain today. A subsequent report said Banta-Cain passed his physical.

The latter news portends the Raiders signing Banta-Cain at some point today. He has spent six of his eight NFL seasons with the New England Patriots. He also played for the 49ers in 2007 and ‘08.

Banta-Cain, 31, started six games for the Patriots last season, and he recorded five sacks. His best season came in 2009, when he notched 10 sacks.

Banta-Cain underwent surgery for an abdominal strain in July, but he apparently has recovered well enough to resume his NFL career.

The Raiders don’t practice until 7:05 tonight, so there won’t be any comment from coach Hue Jackson or Raiders players until after 9 p.m.

Boss, Mitchell and Murphy still out; no sign of Banta-Cain

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, September 8th, 2011 at 7:53 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Once again, the Raiders are conducting practice without starting tight end Kevin Boss, starting wide receiver Louis Murphy and backup safety Mike Mitchell.
Those three have missed significant playing time and aren’t likely to play against the Denver Broncos on Monday night. In fact, Murphy already has been ruled out by coach Hue Jackson.
Jackson said Wednesday night that Mitchell and Boss would need some meaningful practice time if they were to play against the Broncos.
“I would think so,” Jackson said, when asked if Boss and Mitchell needed some practice time. “We want to take a healthy, enthusiastic team to Denver. We’re going to pack our best ball club and go to Denver and get ready to play on Monday night.”

*The Raiders also are practicing without linebacker Tully Banta-Cain, who reportedly worked out for the Raiders earlier today and passed a physical.
The physical was considered key because he underwent surgery in late July for an abdominal injury.
It’s conceivable that the Raiders will wait until the deadline has passed for a vested veteran — players with four or more years accrued service — before signing Banta-Cain and/or cornerback Lito Sheppard.
By waiting, the Raiders wouldn’t be on the hook for the player’s entire 2011 base salary, only a fraction, if they were to release that player at some point in the season.

*Not sure it means anything, but Chaz Schilens and Denarius Moore were the wide receivers with the second-team offense in the portion of practice viewable by the media.
Jacoby Ford and Derek Hagan were the wide receivers with the first-team offense. It’s worth noting that the Raiders, like most teams, mix and match their receivers throughout practice.

*The Raiders are practicing under the lights once again. They will conclude their night practices Friday night, practice mid-day Saturday and then head to Denver on Sunday.

A new year and new attitude. Playoffs or bust, the Nation is back in case you didn't know!

First order of business is shoving the run down Denver's throat. If we can stay healthy for the most part this could be a special year. We are a young team with a good mix of veterans and have the type of leaders we have lacked for a long time in the locker room. The theme for the year is accountability. Be fucking accountable and do your job! RRRRAAAAIIIIDDDDEEEERRRRSSSS!

Are the raiders staying on the east coast after the bronco game? That's a lot of traveling if they don't...
what do you mean "staying on the east coast?"

you do realize that Denver is not on the east coast right? lol

Colorado is 3 states over from California

I'm sure they'll come back to Oakland after the game

But they travel to buffalo on a short week, wouldn't it be beneficial to stay in buffalo (east coast)? Seeing how Denver is a 2.5/3 hour flight...
