mike tyson james toney deontay wilder By Scott Gilfoid: Earlier today, former heavyweight champion of the world Mike Tyson made a comment about unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KO’s), saying that he wants to see how the 6’7” Deontay will react when he faces someone that will punch him back. Deontay then fired back with some comments of his own, and this led to James Toney joining in by telling Deontay he was off base for returning fire on Tyson.

Mike Tyson said this about Deontay as quoted by Showtime: “We have to see what happens when he [Deontay] gets hit back. Anyone can knock someone out, even my 3-year-old son.”

Deontay then gave Tyson his 2 cents, saying “Mike Tyson, Yeah, a 3 year old that wants to quit can bite an ear off too, right? #SmartAleck.”

At this point James Toney came to Tyson’s defense, saying “@BronzeBomber, you’re a damn clown! How you’re going to disrespect a legend like Mike Tyson? He’d whoop you today like I would! You’re a fake! Come see me!”

It seems that Toney felt that Deontay should have just let Tyson’s comment about him go without saying a word.

Deontay then told Toney “Dumb a** JamesToney talks about disrespect but damn this what he had to say about Mike Tyson on You Tube – James Toney Rips Mike Tyson: I would KO Him Easy!”

With Deontay’s huge power, he doesn’t need to hang around so that someone can punch him back, because he’s destroying everyone with his size and power before they can even lay a glove on him. With his height, Deontay doesn’t need to take the kinds of shots that the smaller 5’11” Tyson had to take during his career, because he can bomb his opponents from long range. Look at the 6’6” Wladimir Klitschko. He rarely gets hit because of his height and reach.

It’s the same way with Deontay. He’s not going to give up his height so that he can let shorter, and weaker fighter nail him with shots so that he can show Mike Tyson what happens when Deontay gets hit. The name of the game in boxing is to hit and not get hit back, and Deontay does a great job of that.

The Lara Smith fight will not get cancelled. Its a signed deal for FS1 and the title is now on the line. Canelo wants to get him after the fight but that just won't happen. Im thinking Lara vs Floyd in September if he beats Maidana
What title? I think Lara has an interim title to Floyd's WBA belt.

But then again the WBA is so retarded it's hard to keep track. Is Lara an interim title holder, or a regular title holder and Floyd is the super title holder? Lol so retarded

Canelo Not Interested in Erislandy Lara's WBA Title

By Miguel Rivera

BoxingScene.com reported earlier that Golden Boy Promotions is negotiation a July 12th pay-per-view fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs)*and WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs).

Lara is already*booked to defend his title against Ishe Smith on May 2nd at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. To finalize a deal to face Canelo, Lara would have to withdraw from the Smith defense.

But according to members of Canelo's team,*the fight with Lara would not involve the WBA title - at least for Canelo's side. The Mexican star is not interested in paying the sanctioning fee, pointing at the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr. still holds the recognized WBA title at 154-pounds. Mayweather decisioned Canelo last September. Lara is capable of still making an official defense by paying the sanctioning fee. The belt would become vacant if he lost. The fight is being negotiated for the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds.

Anthony Mundine floored five times in loss to Joshua Clottey

The power-packed left hand of Ghanaian Joshua Clottey sent Anthony Mundine to the canvas five times and put serious doubts over the Australian boxer’s future at Newcastle Entertainment Centre last night.

Clottey outclassed the former rugby league star in a unanimous points decision – 116-108, 115-109, 117-108.

It was Mundine’s sixth loss in 52 fights and first in Newcastle in four bouts.

Mundine was floored in the third, twice in the sixth then again in the eighth and 10th, each time with Clottey’s left hand providing the telling blow.

Mundine’s camp considered throwing in the towel at the end of the 10th but he fought on to finish the 12-round contest.

After the fight, Clottey, whose record is now 38-4 (22 KOs), said Mundine made a mistake dropping to the super-welterweight division, where the Australian held the WBA international title until last night.

Mundine said he had no regrets.

‘‘I want to fight the best but I got caught early,’’ he said.

‘‘I finished the fight on my feet and at the end of the day you’ve got to have a go and fight the best.’’

The 38-year-old said he was not thinking about retirement and that he may look at a rematch with Australian arch-rivals Danny Green or Daniel Geale.

Mundine was stunned early in the third by a left hook then was floored towards the end of the round when he walked into a straight right.

Clottey kept the heat on Mundine in the fourth but the Australian got busy in the fifth to get back in the fight.

But Clottey soon regained his dominance in the sixth, rocking Mundine with another crisp left which sent him to the canvas. He regained his feet but was down again within seconds.

Mundine tried to counter-attack in the seventh but was on the back foot again by the end of the round.

He was felled midway through the eight, Clottey again catching him with a sharp left. He recovered and finished the round strongly.

The Newcastle crowd lifted in the 10th as Mundine landed some encouraging flurries but Clottey never appeared in real danger and sent the three-time world champion to the canvas for a fifth time with another left.

Clottey played it smart in the 12th and final round, avoiding any danger.*

Mayweather surprise visitor to Bradley camp

By Percy D. Della

SACRAMENTO, California—Timothy Bradley broke training camp without fanfare, but not before a surprise visit by boxing’s money man himself, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

A source with connections to Bradley’s inner circle told the Inquirer that Money Mayweather dropped by the Fortune Gym in Hollywood last week and spoke in private with Bradley and his trainer Joel Diaz.

Mayweather, with his close-knit coterie known as the “Money Team” in tow, did a great job dodging the paparazzi busy trailing celebrities on a beeline to see Manny Pacquiao train at the nearby Wild Card Gym, the source said.

The unscheduled courtesy call occurred a day or two before Bradley’s media workout last Thursday, part of the hype for his rematch with eight-division world champion Pacquiao at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

According to the source, his contacts in the Bradley camp would not say what was discussed in private between the two fighters.

He said that in all possibility, Mayweather came by when no one was looking just to give Bradley a pep talk and an added push to beat the fighting Filipino congressman.

The unbeaten Mayweather (45-0, with 26 knockouts), who has resisted fighting Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs) in what could be boxing’s fight for the ages, is known to hand-pick his opponents.

But it was unlikely that Money gave Bradley a deal to fight him since the Palm Springs-area fighter was reportedly given an option to face Pacquiao on April 12, only if he signed a contract extension with Top Rank.

In theory, Bradley, the recipient of a controversial decision over Pacquiao two years ago, would make himself a highly attractive opponent to Mayweather, if he beats the Filipino ring icon again.
Bradley is ranked second to Money by Ring Magazine among the world’s welterweights.

Clottey fought Cotto well but that's when Cotto was sort of a scared fighter. Don't understand why Clottey took such a long lay off from boxing. He would have of given Mayweather problems cuz Mayweather never fought that good of a defensive fighter

Same reason why anyone has a long lat off. First he took some vacation time, turned down some good fights because he wanted bigger since he just fought Pacquiao (see Robert Guerrro), then he sued Top Rank to get out of his contract I believe. When that was finally over ge scheduled a come back fight, injured himself in training camp and bam just like that another year not fighting.

Keith Thurman ready for ‘first chapter’ vs. Julio Diaz
April 9, 2014

Unbeaten welterweight contender Keith "One Time" Thurman said he is looking forward to establishing himself as the "Beast From The East" when he meets two-time lightweight titlewinner Julio Diaz on April 26 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

"I'm going to show them that I'm truly the 'Beast From The East,'" said Thurman, a 25-year-old from Clearwater, Fla. "This is my dream. I'm really looking forward to entertaining the world of boxing."

Thurman-Diaz is the main event of a Showtime-televised tripleheader that will also feature THE RING's number one-rated junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse against rugged lightweight puncher John Molina and WBC lightweight titleholder Omar Figueroa Jr. opposite spolier Jerry Belmontes.

"Camp is great. This will be my fourth camp preparing for 12 rounds. It's just getting easier. My weight is on point; my diet is on point. Everything is going well. My whole gym is impressed with what I've been doing and I feel great. I'm looking forward to it. I'm motivated to being the main event and headlining on April 26," said Thurman, in an interview with RingTV.com.

"With this being the headliner, that makes me passionate. Knowing that I have a bright future after a great performance, that's what motivates me. I'm really looking forward to watching the undercard with Lucas Matthysse and Omar Figueroa. I just can't wait to get into the ring and display my talents again on April 26."

Thurman-Diaz comes amid a run of intriguing fights in the 147-pound division.

Shawn Porter defends his IBF belt against former titleholder Paulie Malignaggi on the April 19 undercard of the light heavyweight title unification bout between IBF beltholder Bernard Hopkins and WBA counterpart Beibut Shumenov.

On May 3, Floyd Mayweather Jr. defends his RING and WBC welterweight championships against WBA counterpart Marcos Maidana, supported by a clash of 147-pounders between ex-beltholders Amir Khan and Luis Collazo. Mayweather-Maidana also includes a 140-pound bout between Carlos Molina and Adrien Broner, the latter of whom was dethroned as WBA 147-pound titleholder following a unanimous decision loss to Maidana in December.

"I'm looking forward to all of the fights that are about to occur this month and all the way up to the May 3 card. There's a lot of great welterweight competiton going on. I call what is about to happen the first chapter," said Thurman.

"I'm really looking forward to the end results of the first chapter of the year and looking forward to stepping into the second chapter of the year and hoping that I get a fight with a top-10 fighter that I think that I truly deserve."

Thurman (22-0, 20 knockouts) scored a ninth-round technical knockout over veteran gatekeeper Jesus Soto Karass, who was floored once each in the fifth and final rounds of their bout in December. In his previous bout last July, Thurman scored a 10th-round knockout of previously unbeaten Argentine Diego Chaves, whom he dropped once each in the ninth and final rounds.

Although the 34-year-old Diaz (40-9-1, 29 KOs) is 0-2-1 in his past three fights, those bouts were a draw and a unanimous decision loss against Porter and a close decision setback to Khan.

In succession, Diaz drew with Porter in December 2012, floored Khan in the fourth round in April of last year and was outpointed in September by Porter, whose next bout was a unanimous decision that dethroned Devon Alexander in December.

Diaz has been working out with WBO welterweight titleholder Tim Bradley in advance of Bradley's April 12 rematch with Manny Pacquiao, whom Bradley dethroned by splitdecision in June 2012.

Diaz said that he believed he can break down and finish off Thurman during an interview with RingTV.com.

"I'm one of the most highly-underrated fighters in the division, if not the sport. But I don't care. You can continue to put me into a box that I don't fit into. Soon, you're going to realize that I don't fit into that box and that I'm on a completely different level. I'm an entirely different pedigree of fighter. But everyone can make their judgements based on what they see. They've only seen a fraction. I've been boxing for 18 years," said Thurman.

"All you can do is watch one performance at a time and see what I do under the bright lights. Julio Diaz has never seen a Keith Thurman in the ring. He knows nothing about me or what he needs to do to prepare for me. But I like any fighter who steps into the ring with confidence. I want someone with heart, integrity and an ego. Someone who is passionate enough to come in and try to pull the upset against me because it's not going to happen.
