rap ain't changed, it was said by Chuck D in the late 80's on Yo! MTV Raps, keep ya day job cuz rap don't pay a whole lot! and that's comin from one of the greatest to ever do rap music, ya digg? I'm not trippin on the challenges to push my music becuz rap is not my only hustle, ya digg? But I feel free-downloaders and bootleggers have a lot to do with music sales being down tho' cuz it takes away from the morality of money & music, music makes money and money makes music...

I think it is a challenging time to be an independent artist because there are way too many rappers. But mcs with undeniable talent will always break through. The non-rapping ass rappers with no skills won't last.
Rappers like Nump ain't gonna last. Federation ain't gonna last.
This is not hate at all these artists just don't have the skills to keep peoples' attention. Quote this shit and look back on it in the future.

Its the worst time for the music business period... And probally better for a indy then mainstream cause at least you won't get pushed back for years

But the get rich quick indys are gone you need to build a name brand these days... Cause retail other then cd sales is where the money is going to flow...

Cause people still spend money, they just won't spend it on cd's when they know they can get it for free! So the game plan should be similiar but you can't just be tunnel vision that ya cd will blow you up... You need to gig, have a website with a shopping cart fulla shit they can swoop up. Be creative with ya business approach and have a game plan !

This is all debatable. There are many factors that will either play into your success or not. The game is changing constantly, you need to keep your eyes and ears open and be business minded and adapt to those changes. To those who actually have a career off their music and their company, they will tell you different than this thread suggests. It's not the worst time to be an independent rap artist, it's the worst time to be a half assed independent rap artist. Cat's aren't serious enough, don't blame it on the game, blame it on yourself.

To those out there getting it, keep doing it.

pretty much everything he said was true
BUT, the bay music scene operates on its own, regardless of the conditions with mainstream music. So pretty much, indie music is whats keeping the bay scene alive

Another point I'd like to make is, WORST TIME TO BE A MAJOR ARTIST ON A MAJOR LABEL. Why? Numerous reasons, but one that is most valid would be DOWNLOADING. It's almost the "Norm" now for a kid to download all of his music, kids these days don't even know what record shops look like, they know of Limewire, and Cabos and Soul Seeker and all those P2P programs. Sure you can get money but, you'll only get what $2 back from each sale, being independent, you can get what, $6 atleast. You won't sell as much but you will be in charge of your own product, and you also will own the ROYALTIES.

Peace.

Another reason it's good to be independent is by being able to be in touch with your fans DIRECTLY and promote and sell your own PRODUCT to your fans DIRECTLY. You control your own destiny, your direction, you don't have to wait on a label for months and months to years, only to get dropped and be back at start.
