im marketing my shit to only midgets.

shit gon be called

the short album.

but nah like jay ef es said you gotta learn how to get a little bit of everyone involved...atleast the core audience of people who buy rap albums...focusing on a single type of person is gon' hurt your sales..whether its black white surfer gangster nerd mexican east west south midwest you gotta find ways to get everyone to relate to your shit..

I wouldnt market to everyone, cause It dont work like that. You have to set up your marketing for your target audience. For example If you a gangsta rapper, why would you promote to the backpackers and vise versa, and I wouldnt tell a rapper to make a song for anything or body in particular...just make songs to the best of your ability, thats part of the problem we feel we gotta make certain songs ...fuck that be you...although if you do make songs for the masses i aint mad,its business. how about this...I dont care if you got a million dollars behind you...if you selling beef, a vegetarian wont buy it no matter how good it is.If I had a good amount of resources..I would (being I am mostly doing gangsta shit) research every state, draw a graph and show what consumers are buying,I would then do the same for each big city,or region in that state. From there I would know my target areas...Hit the college radios, and underground radio stations, clubs, and have a street team hit all that up,have commercials aired on the local cable network, maybe even buy some advertising on the more popular radio stations.....they may not play your music, but they will play your advertisements,I would hit up some military bases and hand out promotional material to them....remember there are people on that base from all over..then they take what they got from you to there home town far away when they on leave...I would hit up alot of high schools and give away lots of free t shirts and other shit.....the list goes on.....but thats a dream cause i aint even got resources like that...yet..

you do know jack n the box's tacos are made out of soy, right? not alot of people know that.

ever hear of tofu burgers?

im just sayin.

marketing is a different machine. its not quite about selling them beef, its giving them the next best thing.

if your a gangster rapper why would you also market to backpackers? money. the more people you can get to relate the broader your target market will be and the more chance of revenue youll see. believe it or not, by mitchy working with strong arm steady he was able to kill two birds with one stone. niggas that woulda never even bothered listening will now listen because hes down with phil the ag. i know a gang of backpackers now that are like "mitchy slick is dope as fuck" and they wouldnt even have gave the nigga a chance. know what i mean?

you gotta broaden your target sometimes. thats how niggas like 50 cent got so popular. imagine if he just said fuck this imma sell albums out the trunk of my car and didnt want to get the white kids to buy his shit. would he be able to get movie deals?

yet and still you know how to market yourself better than i would..i know how to market myself better than you would..its all on a individual basis and everyone should plan accordingly based on what they do.

this is the EXACT same example i was gonna point out....
I would never have listened to Phil the Agony if it weren't for Mitchy Slick and SAS...good shit.

But there's a market for everything. And I would hit up every urban area period...then I'll hit up the rich white folks and call it a "fundraiser" its all good...

I know radio is crucial for the gig leagues, and I would never turn my back on it,but the reality of where Im at and others in similar situations, maybe we need to think outside the box.Now radio has always been a big part or factor to many sucesses, however as you notice record stores are closing....so shelf space may become limited to mostly majors in the future.....Internet radio, and xm radio I would focus on that...I personally dont have xm radio...I remember growing up when cable was introduced...people was saying....pay for T.V....I get it for free...why would i pay for T.V.? same goes for x.m radio, and now is the time to start building those relationships.Who is to say that it will catch on? with all this file sharing and illegal downloading...whats the future looking like in music? My point being what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.
The blue print for hip hop may become obsolete

u said it exactly...we need a new blueprint now...all the other shit..t-shirts and high school give aways is thruvo! it's a wrap!

u even need a radio promo to get added to xm radio and sirius radio too

the majors got us cornered

instead of being able to spend 10-20,000$ on an album and run thru an indi distributer and do all the "cliche" promtional tactics and being able to sell a cool amount of records and make profit is OVER in about 90% of situations

U NEED RADIO NOW!

I was just tellin' somebody this the other day Rocc. The day of havin' a gang of soundscans only and no radio, and getting a deal is over. Nowadays if you get your shit on the radio, and get heavy spins in other markets, not just your own market, then the majors come callin. Shit, you don't even have to have an album out now, and if you're gettin' major spins, you can get a deal. So, I definitely agree with you on this, radio is one of the answers. But that shit cost hella money...
