WBA heavyweight champion (for the moment) James Toney has been suspended for 90 days for violating the New York State Athletic Commission's drug abuse regulations in his fight with John Ruiz on April 30. In a statement issued earlier today, Toney denied any use of performance enhancing drugs. New York Newsday reported last night that Toney tested positive for the drug nandrolone.

"All the proper procedures were followed," said NYSAC chairman Ron Scott Stevens of the testing and subsequent suspension of Toney, which also carries a $10,000 fine. Stevens also noted that Toney can request a hearing within 30 days of being notified about the suspension.

Team Ruiz now awaits a ruling from the WBA which will put the championship belt back around the waist of "The Quiet Man". According to the rules of the sanctioning body, "If the challenger wins the championship fight and his antidrug test is positive and the losing champion has a negative result, then the champion shall retain his title in spite of the loss and the challenger shall be disqualified and shall not box for the title from the World Boxing Association during the next two (2) years and only after presentation of medical evidence that he has been rehabilitated."

Ruiz' outspoken trainer / manager Norman Stone wasted no time in taking the offensive against Toney. "All I've ever heard was how bad Johnny Ruiz was for boxing," he said in a press release sent this afternoon. "Who's bad for boxing now? Toney's always talking about being a man. Well, he should be a man and admit what he did instead of making excuses. He can't talk trash about us anymore. Toney said he only fears God; he should fear the New York State Athletic Commission, too. "Toney shot his mouth off, talking a lot of BS and degrading Johnny. But who's going to have the last laugh? I believe everybody in his corner should be responsible, including Dan Goossen. They can make up all of the 'the dog ate my homework' excuses they want, but Toney flunked his test and they
should own up to it."

That Fool is so sorry, If it's true he's a disgrace, I'm thoroughly dissapointed and I hope they feed him to Wladimir Klitchzko, or David Tua.

But he DID NOT look like it. And he denies it, so I'm still waiting you know.

It wasn't his fault... he was taking medicine prescribed by his doctor for a triceps and biceps injury. Plus he didn't even look like he was taking steriods. He had no muscles at all. This ruling should be overturned. Ruiz got spanked so bad he retired.

Toney didn't put a needle of steroid juice in his behind. He's not that kind of man, he's old school. I'm sure he took pills and drank shakes that were maybe recommended by his doctor to speed up the healing process of his muscle tears.

James Toney's body is barely in shape when he fights. The guy is not rip or anything so I doubt he injects needles in his ass to get hella stronger or faster. Just look at his body. And another thing, Toney dont need steroids to be a Champ cuz the guy fights wit pure heart and pure boxing skills. Its not like the guy is a K.O. machine, he mostly wins his fights by wearing opponents down and out smarting them.

oH AND..........

James Toney said yesterday that he won't appeal the decision to change his WBA heavyweight title win over John Ruiz to a no decision after he failed a post-fight steroid test. Toney stressed that what he took was a legal medicine presribed by a doctor to treat a tricep/bicep injury and if the fight would have happened in June or July as originally planned, the substance would have been out of his system. "It's not a drug to make me all big and strong," Toney said on ESPN. "My body looked terrible that night." Toney also said, "I don't blame nobody. I don't blame the myself, I don't blame the doctor, it was an honest mistake. I didn't do nothing to try and cheat nobody. I've had 74 fights without it. Why would I take steroids to beat John Ruiz? That's ridiculous." Toney was given 30 days to challenge the test, should he change his mind.

They took the belt from Toney and gave it back to Ruiz. That's some straight-up bullshit but it's all good though, Toney will recover from that.
