so i was watchin this history documentary about some civilization in Africa and there was this old lady talkin about this legend about this family of elephants. long story short this baby elephant got fucked up by a gang of lions and the mother elephant went to the edge of a cliff which had an elephant graveyard at the bottom(elephants supposedly know when they are going to die and usually all go to one place to pass away)and threw her self over as a act of suicide. this got me thinkin, do animals possess the ability to commit suicide? id think they wouldnt, but then i got thinking why not. humans sometime commit suicide because of the lack of activity in there life, they complain that they dont want to just live day by day eeking by, that its the simplicity of life that eats away at them. now you look at animals and how fuckin simple they are, are they purely run by instinct, can they get emotionaly damaged? iv herd of cats and dogs being diagnosed with depression. humans are usually driven by something in there lives, whatabout animals, they just kick it day by day not analysing things like retards? What is difference in the mind of animals to the minds of humans. i mean we are mammals so we are animals. so do you think coco the gorilla every thinks about a better place then the prison he lives in ,prison=zoo.

Elephants are also very intelligent and are social creatures. I could see why the death of her baby would make the mother kill herself. That is really sad. The more intelligent an animal, the more likely it is to suffer from depression. Dolphins, Gorillas, Elephants.. they're all very intelligent. I've seen shows about elephants where if one was injured, they all stayed around the hurt one. Brought it food, and brought it shade and water. Mourned its death. Those degrees of emotion are very similar to ours.

monkey see monkey do, if a monkey saw a human blow his brains out with a colt 45 you think he could understand that if he was depressed and his life equaled to shit that ending it would stop the suffereing?people also turn the gun on themselves because they think about what happens after death, that it couldnt possibly be as bad as the shit there experiencing right now. what the hell goes on in rovers lil head, they not capable to think outside the box???

ya iv herd about elephants really looking out for themselves, which brings me to another question, do animals think of religion, i mean more then half the people that are fully imersed in religion aint much brighter then animals, and doesnt god open his arms for eveyrbody, dog or human? i saw some show on discovery chanel that showed a gang of monkeys which lived in a communal hierarchy, so they gotta be thinkin of some crazy shit

i would think that animals lack the necessary cognitive and brain functions in order to theorize about religions. manipulation of the environment is totally different from the manipulation of something that is essentially intangible. i don't think animal hierarchies really says that the animals truly know what they are doing, only that they recognize that some are stronger than others, and fall in accordingly. its like how there's alpha males in wolf packs and shit. or dominant gorillas or lions even.

Lemmings are cute though. I found this:

"Lemming suicide is fiction. Contrary to popular belief, lemmings do not periodically hurl themselves off of cliffs and into the sea. Cyclical explosions in population do occasionally induce lemmings to attempt to migrate to areas of lesser population density. When such a migration occurs, some lemmings die by falling over cliffs or drowning in lakes or rivers. These deaths are not deliberate "suicide" attempts, however, but accidental deaths resulting from the lemmings' venturing into unfamiliar territories and being crowded and pushed over dangerous ledges. In fact, when the competition for food, space, or mates becomes too intense, lemmings are much more likely to kill each other than to kill themselves."

no you dummie, animals don't theorize about religions cuz they have no SOUL! We have souls, they don't. My preacher even told me so it MUST be true.

Intelligent animals can feel, and rationalize. Maybe not on the same level as us, but then again it's hard to judge levels because they're animals. But I know they feel things. I like that they're open with their feelings. If a dog doesn't like you, you are sure to know by the way he acts. He's not two faced about it. And my cat lets me know when he's pissed at me. And I know when he's sad.

But I think the "higher" level animals like elephants and gorillas are in a different category than house pets.
Then again, some people are on the same level as house pets..

I know I like most animals more than I like people in general. My cat is less whiney than most human beings I know, and all I need to do is feed him and change his litter. Most of my boyfriends have required a shitload more maintenance. And they were always a lot pissier when I didn't change their litter soon enough.
