It cracks me up whenever people start talking about this. Two questions:

1) What has happened to the lyrics and the popularity of gangsta rap since the late 1980s?
Answer - The lyrics have gotten WAY WORSE and the popularity of it has EXPLODED.

2) What has happened with violent crime in America since the late 1980s?
Answer - It has gone WAY down (Seattle does 1/4 the number of homicides it did in the 80s and early 90s).

If there going to draw any sort of conclusion based on mere correlation, then the conclusion would be that gangsta rap DRIVES DOWN crime/sexual violence, not the other way around.

This is a good point.

When you can roll around playing that shit at ear-deafening levels, you can get out a lot of agression. When all you have to listen to is pussy ass conscious rap with horrible sounding beats, corny samples, and fucked-up sounding bass......man, you feel like stomping someone out!!

I think the main point of it is that gangsta rap is everywhere and its starting to get old. Its so popular that the youth are recieving few other forms of rap music and should be exposed to something else. You make good points with your questions though.

Conscious rap would be good if they would SHUT THE FUCK UP about Politics. Now IS NOT the time for that shit. It's not even like they're singing about Pell Grants, or making funny songs about wearing Ross gear instead of shopping at expensive stores, or shit that can ACTUALLY HELP.

It's always "The government likes to kick puppies!", or "The media, brainwashing the people!"--and the shit is lame. They need to get off their own dicks and stop trying to be teachers, and start being ENTERTAINERS like all the rest.

Gangsta Rap, or whatever you choose to call it, is not going anywhere. Period. It's not like every song is about murdering and robbing, like back in the day. Every rapper has the formula down now: A few I'm-A-Gangsta slumps, handful of In-Da-Club cuts, a couple three I-Love-These-Hoes tracks, some Dis-Life-Is-Hard songs for good measure, and you just got yourself a CD.

The kids don't need to hear gangsta rap until they are older and can understand it. I agree with what all you cats are saying personally but I also like groups like Blue Scholars too.

I think people should just keep doin what they do and rap about whatever they want, the market place will decide in the end. There's nothing wrong with political rap, look at Immortal Technique, dude's fuckin filthy and I don't care for east coast rap. I agree that too many people try to do gangsta rap, but then again Tadou raps so it looks like there's always people that can't who are trying :) lol...I'm just playin Doofster.
