Russell, Denzel join rappers
Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington have turned to hanging out with rappers — on the set of their current film.
Rap stars RZA, Common and T.I. have signed on for the 1970s crime drama 'American Gangster'.
Filming under the direction of Ridley Scott, it tells the story of Frank Lucas (Washington) who smuggled heroin into the USA by stashing the drug inside coffins of American soldiers killed in the Vietnam war.
After the drug lord was nabbed by cop Richie Roberts (Crowe), he turned informant, helping Roberts to nail corrupt foreigners and cop.
While Wu-Tang Clan member RZA plays a surveillance expert who partners Roberts, Common (real name: Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr) and T.I. have been cast as part of Lucas' drug empire.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, who previously worked alongside Washington in Spike Lee's 'The Inside Man', will play Lucas' brother.
John Ortiz, who was last seen as the villain opposite Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the recent bigscreen remake of 'Miami Vice', is to portray Roberts' partner who turns to drugs and murder.
"Right now I'm learning everything I can about my character," T.I. (real name Clifford Joseph Harris Jr) told Billboard.com.
"I'm just there to soak things up. There's a bunch of Academy Award-winners on this cast and I'm just there to learn. I'm in school."
The rapper previously appeared in the film 'ATL'.
RZA (known to his parents as Robert Diggs) is composing songs for an animated series, 'Afro Samurai', voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, and has just written the music for 'The Protector', a film directed by Tony Jaa.
He's previously appeared in films such as 'Coffee and Cigarettes' and the Jennifer Aniston vehicle 'Derailed'.
Ejiofor, who made his name in 2002's 'Dirty Pretty Things' has already been seen in 'Four Brothers' for director John Singleton and will soon show up oppossite Julianne Moore in 'Children of Men', a science-fiction drama.
He's next lined up to appear in 'Lethal Weapon' star Danny Glover's 'Toussant', about the revolutionary who helped end French rule in Haiti during the 1700s.
