RICHMOND -- An angry crowd prevented a Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy from taking a shooting victim to the hospital in her patrol car.
The deputy heard gun shots around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. When she got to the scene, she found shell casings and a 20-year-old victim wounded in the ankle during a drive-by shooting, according to police.
But when she tried to take the victim to the hospital after calling emergency services, a crowd of 30 or 40 people gathered around her car and demanded to transport the victim themselves.
One member of the crowd threw a metal scooter at the deputy's car, according to Richmond police Lt. Rick Clark. The deputy eventually relented, and the victim's friends took the man to Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo.
Police did not release the victim's name. Although police do not normally take victims to hospitals, Clark said the crowd initially asked the deputy to transport the man before changing its mind.
