May 22, 2007) -- When the Vikings traded wide receiver Randy Moss to Oakland two years ago, one of the receivers they signed to help replace him was former first-round pick Travis Taylor.
Now that the Raiders have traded Moss to New England, one of the receivers that Oakland has signed to help replace him is none other than Taylor.
Taylor has become The Receiver To Replace Moss.
Oakland got him at a bargain price, too. After failing to find a more interested suitor, Taylor signed a one-year, veteran-minimum, $720,000 deal that included no signing bonus.
Even better for the Raiders, if Taylor makes the team, his salary will count only $435,000 against Oakland's salary cap.
The Raiders are hoping Travis Taylor can be more productive than his predecessor Randy Moss.
Oakland is landing a veteran receiver who has bounced around the league but who was productive the past two seasons in Minnesota. Taylor caught 57 passes for 651 yards for the Vikings last season, and 50 for 604 the season before.
But Minnesota was willing to say goodbye to Taylor's 107 receptions -- seven of which went for touchdowns -- because it felt it had better and younger receivers.
NFL personnel people said that, while playing in Minnesota, Taylor failed to produce many yards after the catch. They also said his reputation was not one of toughness. He also has pending legal issues from a New Year's Day arrest for disorderly conduct, fifth-degree assault, and interfering with pedestrian or vehicular traffic -- all misdemeanors. His legal issues had nothing to do with the Vikings decision not to re-sign him.
But Taylor will have a chance to prove wrong all skeptics in Oakland, which is looking for a veteran presence to help take Moss' spot.
Oakland has a rejuvenated Jerry Porter, a productive Ronald Curry, a motivated Mike Williams and now another receiver with points to prove.
Taylor is being called on again as a replacement for Moss.
