Offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry took part in his first mini-camp as a Raider this week. After practice he spoke with the media at the Raiders facility in Alameda, Calif.

Q: How did mini-camp go for you?

Newberry: I feel really good right now. I did all the individual stuff and did the first team period and I feel really well.

Q: How are you feeling about joining the Raiders?

Newberry: I’m excited about the opportunity to play for the Raiders. The majority of my friends are Raider fans so I have a lot of people happy that I am wearing Silver and Black this year.

Q: How are you feeling physically?

Newberry: The knee that I had fixed two years ago is giving me no trouble and it feels fantastic. The other knee is getting better as I strengthen it. I am almost there but I have about another month or two before my strength is back all the way. I am ready to play. I will be there this year.

Q: What are your thoughts about the Raiders offensive line?

Newberry: There are a lot of athletic people. There are a lot of quick guys that can get to a gap. We can flat out move. This is the best group of offensive lineman that I’ve been around.

Q: What does Lane Kiffin bring to this team?

Newberry: The tempo of practice, running from drill to drill. That is what I am use to and it definitely works. I enjoy it. I love the tempo and what he’s doing.

Andrew Walter Mini-Camp Q&A
April 12, 2007
Andrew Walter. strapped on his helmet and took the field for the first time in 2007 at the Raiders first mini-camp. After practice, he addressed the media at the Raiders facility in Alameda, Calif.

Q: How do you feel about the workouts and the training?

Andrew Walter.: I feel like we had a good day of work. We’ve been meeting every morning at 7:30 learning the offense. I feel great about the new coaches and I feel great about what they’re doing. I feel great about the 2007 Oakland Raiders.

Q: Are you doing more physical stuff to get yourself ready for the brutal 16 weeks?

Andrew Walter.: I’m doing a lot of the same stuff. Coach Jeff Fish has a great program and we are doing a lot more core and movement for all this role out stuff. That is the kind of stuff we are doing in the weight room with Coach Fish and his strength staff.

Q: Do you go into this off-season thinking that you have a chance to be the starting quarterback this year?

Andrew Walter.: I absolutely think I am going to be the man. Right now I am taking all the reps so it is a great opportunity for me to get use to all the schemes, the guys, and I am trying to get on top of what the coaches are asking me to do. I feel real good about that.

Q: What has the coach said to you up to this day about competing?

Andrew Walter.: Coach is about competing and I’m about competing so whatever they decide to do I’m ready to compete. I feel good about 2007 Oakland Raiders right now and what were putting into shape on the field, as far as anything else. It doesn’t concern me.

Q: How does this offense fit for you compared to the others that have been here since you’ve been here?

Andrew Walter.: It’s a perfect fit, I love it. I love the tempo of what they’re trying to do at practice. I love the schemes of what they’re trying to do, I love the verbiage, I love the terminology, I love all that stuff. It’s a perfect fit and I’m thrilled by it.

Coach Kiffin Mini-Camp Q&A
April 10, 2007

Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin addressed the media following practice on Day 1 of the team's April mini-camp at the Raiders facility in Alameda, Calif.

Head Coach Lane Kiffin: That’s the pace of practice that we have to get to, we still have a long ways to go. It’s day one, guys are out there moving around, they’re starting to understand the tempo, what we’ve preached about in our meetings for awhile now. Now that being said, we have a long ways to go with it, but that’s the tempo we practice at, because I don’t know any other tempo.

Q: Is that game simulation?

Coach Kiffin: Yeah, it is. It’s not about the length of practice. We don’t have extremely long practices, but they're high tempo, very high energy, and guys are moving because that’s how you play. Last time I checked you don’t play in slow motion. You have to continue to bring them along and obviously guys that are not in the best of shape are going to struggle initially with that tempo.

Q: [Jeremy] Newberry is used to that tempo, how good is it for guys who are used to it?

Coach Kiffin: Well it’s good to have a couple of guys who have been in a tempo like that before. But in the end, it is still individual guys and getting them every day and bringing them forward. Guys will be at different paces and eventually the will all be in.

Q: Are you pleased with the attendance?

Coach Kiffin: We are pleased, over 95 percent attendance today and guys out here are working extremely hard and we’re excited about the guys that are here. It is a voluntary camp and the practices are completely voluntary for guys to come out here. Work if you want to work.

Q: How much do you sell participation?

Coach Kiffin: We’re always competing. That’s a baseline philosophy of this team - competing. So, we’re competing to get guys here as well too. We’ve had phone conversations over time to make sure that [coaches] are trying to get guys here that are able to be here.

Q: [Andrew Walter.] was moving around more than we [the media] are used to seeing. Is that a part of his game that you think can be exploited?

Coach Kiffin: That’s our system. Guys come in and play within our system and we have to get guys better at what they don’t do really well in the system.

Q: How is he doing?

Coach Kiffin: He’s getting better.

Q: What’s it like to hold the first pick in the draft?

Coach Kiffin: It’s a great situation obviously. We’re the only people right now that control our own destiny. Obviously we’re looking at a number of options there with players.

Q: Do you feel comfortable with the Raiders scouting department?

Coach Kiffin: I feel very comfortable with it. There’s been a few things where we’ve had to sit down and I’ve had to give my input on how we need things to be done, but it’s a system that has been in place for a long time and I’m very happy with it so far.

Could you imagine

denver post: So Travis Henry, how are things looking now you are in Denver?

travis Henry: well you know, I didn't want to be traded and things just don't look good here. I mean they got a 2nd yr QB, rod smith is on the decline, and I don't even want to talk about the dlinemen situation.
