Fielder charges Dodgers clubhouse door, stopped by security

By David Brown

Don't get Prince Fielder(notes) angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

The Brewers slugger doesn't look all that mad in the photo but emotions inside Fielder (right) are about ready to boil into a rage during the final moments of the Dodgers 17-4 victory Tuesday night.

So incensed was Fielder at being hit with a pitch by right-hander Guillermo Mota(notes) in the ninth inning, he tried to storm the home team's clubhouse after the game, reporters and other witnesses said.

Hulk smash? Almost.

A security presence delayed Fielder — who was screaming mad with obscenities — from opening the door and confronting Mota or the other Dodgers. Fielder's teammates Casey McGehee(notes) and Bill Hall(notes) physically restrained him from taking his anger further.

The Dodgers had no idea what was happening 25 feet away.

From MLB.com:

Catcher Russell Martin(notes) asked reporters, "Security had to hold him back?"

"That's all right," Martin added. "I mean, it's 25 against one."

Mota, who played for the Brewers a season ago, hit Fielder in apparent retaliation for a Milwaukee pitcher plunking Manny Ramirez(notes) earlier in the game. There's no sign in the video of what's coming in a few minutes — which is kind of scary.

Fielder calmed down enough afterward to sarcastically answer questions.

"He came inside. It just got away from him," Fielder said. "It happens. That's baseball. He tried to come inside."

When asked about his postgame march to the other side, Fielder deadpanned: "I don't remember that."

Martin sympathized with Fielder to a point.

"It's just part of the game," Martin said. "Our premier hitter gets hit, and he gets protection. I understand [Fielder] is frustrated, but you don't take care of that after the game."

Brewers manager Ken Macha thinks it's all a dirty business.

From MLB.com:

"It's a part of the game that I don't like," Macha said. "We're just trying to get out of the game. We're kind of getting our butts kicked pretty good, and I thought it was obvious because the guy hits Prince and then walks straight off the mound."

Further, Macha says Mota should be suspended by the league.

"[...] This kind of mentality puts everybody in jeopardy," Macha said. "Giving [Mota] a $500 fine and a two-day suspension, that's not enough. This kind of thing should be cleaned up."

"We're not trying to hit anybody, OK? We're losing by 13 runs. We're trying to get 24 outs. We're not trying to hit anybody. That kind of mentality, I think should be taken care of. We'll see what happens."

Macha expects to put Fielder in the lineup in today's series finale.

yeah but you dont throw at the guy that late in the game when your team is up by double digits, no reason for that.. and its not like they plunked manny on purpose.. this one was on purpose, especially with marijane up there.

you dont see giants pitchers plunking the other teams best hitter after aaron rowand has been getting plunked alot this season

thats exactly what im saying ^^

same principle that Martin is talking about.. "if you get mad you should show it on the field not after the game.."

well if you're gonna plunk someone do it early in the game not towards the end of it. Im sure that added more fuel to the fire, getting plunked when not necessary.

From Andrew Baggarly's (Mercury News) blog:

It didn’t shock me to see footage of Prince Fielder being held back from entering the home clubhouse at Dodger Stadium. And it didn’t shock me that Guillermo Mota was the guy he wanted on the other side of the double doors.

If you haven’t seen the footage, find it here.

Earlier this season, we saw Fielder doing something strange as we walked to the clubhouse after a game at Miller Park. Jonathan Sanchez had hit Fielder with a pitch, and you could tell by Prince’s body language that he didn’t appreciate it very much. It was a curveball, though, and it was obviously not intentional.

After the game, in the service area between the two clubhouses, Fielder was sitting by himself in a golf cart with a scowl on his face. He was staring at the floor of the cart. He did not look happy.

Was he waiting for Sanchez? Was he contemplating a walk down to the Giants clubhouse? Nawww, that couldn’t be it, I thought.

Now I’m wondering.

As for Mota, this isn’t the first time an opposing player has attempted to go into an opposing clubhouse to throttle him. A couple years ago, Mike Piazza actually did venture inside the visiting clubhouse at the Mets’ spring training stadium in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after Mota hit him with a pitch.

The previous spring, Piazza charged the mound after Mota hit him, and even wrapped two hands around his throat before they were separated.

When Mota hit Piazza again the following spring, the Mets’ catcher became enraged and charged the mound once more. Mota literally ran off the field. A few minutes later, Piazza walked into the Dodgers clubhouse with wild eyes and passed the reporters and clubhouse guys like they weren’t even there. I’ve never seen anyone so angry in my life.

Someone had alerted Mota that Piazza was on his way, because he’d made a beeline for the exit. Brian Jordan was his getaway driver, pulling up in a black Escalade. Mota literally jumped in, tires literally screeched as they left the parking lot, and they probably gave a few glances in the rear-view mirror on the 30-mile drive back to Vero Beach.

Mota sure knows how to pick his enemies, I guess.

Fuck Mota...that's some fucked up shit. I'd be pissed off if I was Fielder too...if you watch the vid where he actually gets hit, he's all like "Really?! The fuck!? You guys are up double digits and you're gonna beam me!?!"

Fuck that. I'd beat Mota's ass.

mota hit prince with a pitch and before prince could charge the mound mota walked to the dugout and was ejected. prince would have done it on the field except the guy he wanted was off the field in less than 30 seconds.

fuck the dodgers.
