PHONK BETA
YOU’RE best known for your work with the Brotha Lynch Hung. What else have you been doin?
BEEN working on my album, it’s a lot of me and my homies from Siccmade. Took me a minute, went through some bad ordeals, master tapes were stolen so I had to start from scratch. The real surprise is the album after that, I’m working on that now. It’s called the Dark Album, I have no features on that, just strictly me and my beats. The first album is called Phonk Phenomena, actually it’s like a five album sequel. First is PP, second is the DA and the third is Mouth of Madness. Then Betas Fables. Just story telling raps and stuff like that, just sayin what goes on in the hood. & I have got a compilation that I’m workin on with C.O.S., we almost done with that already. We just gotta get the features on there, beats are done and everything, and it’s pretty cool. I’m lookin forward to that. I’m helping Cann with the Uthanizm project. That’s Cann’s & Lynch’s little compilation. Me & COS got a comp comin. We don’t have a name yet, we’re goin through deciding which name we want to use.
YOU'RE on the mic?
I’ve been rapping before I could produce rap beats. I played the piano all my life, so it’s no thang, I been doin that since 3. Far as this rap stuff, I been rapping since ’83, probably Lynch is the only one that knows how tight I am. Put it this way, I rap better than I make beats. A lotta people don’t know.
HOW do you approach your production?
I’m a dark person and Lynch is a dark person, that’s why we click. Everything I do is something is something either mad or sad about the music. I can make happy stuff, but it’s something in there that changes everything around and makes it more of a negative type feel. You know like major and minor tone keys, I’m more of a major type person.
SO keyboards tend to be your starting point?
I don’t really like any of my beats, everybody else seems to like em.
DO you think you’re still looking for your style?
Yeah, I haven’t found my style yet. Actually I switch up a lot. People hear a certain Beta type beat, thinks it’s Beta, and that’s when I switch up on em. Give them something else a little different. I don’t have an original style, that’s were everybody fucks up. Everybody keeps talking about the LOADED album, but that was how I was feeling at the time when I did that. The period must move on and my production has gotten better than that.
I THINK it’s that your production sounds so much older than you actually are.
That’s the jazz in it man. I studied under the influence of listening to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Brotha Thelonius Monk, people like that. My dad would wake me up every morning playin John Coltrane “My Favorite Thing.” To this day, if I call him at a certain hour, he’ll be at the piano playin it.
