SPLANGISH NIGHTS
Last Thursday local rap group Empire celebrated with an off the hook record release party at the Grand Emporium. Their debut album, “Crowned”, is finally ready for mass consumption. I’ve been screamin’ about the CD for months. The night included a blazin’ set in which the four-man crew (Grant Rice, S.G., Luna and Panic) performed several tracks during a rousing 45-minute set. I was very impressed with Empire’s live show. Their punk rock like energy reminded me a lot of Tech N9ne.
A who’s who of the KC rap community was in the house for the “Hollywood” style event. Underground rap god Tech N9ne flew in from Los Angeles just to attend. Music producer and filmmaker ( “The Players” ) Icy Roc attended with two hot dimes. Jimmy “JJ” Walker of “Good Times” along with maverick comedy club owner Craig Glazer made an appearance. The Popper who provided details about his new single was chillin’ with his crew. X-TAC back home from “The Lou” was posted and slingin’ copies of his new CD.
Tim Finn of The Kansas City Star was on the set. DJ Fresh was on the tables droppin’ hot beats of course. And Shorty former 95.7 on-air personality, was supporting her hubby, Empire’s manager Mike Savage who produces Johnny Dare’s radio show.
Empire’s new CD is impressively crunk. It’s well produced and a manic mix of Cypress Hill, N.W.A. and Green Day. The group has been spending a lot of time out in L.A. shopping for a deal. They have even received a little love from L.A.’s “The Beat” 105.9FM which has been spinning a few of the group’s singles.
