1. Triple X (8.5 / 10)
The first track of the CD starts with classic Too Short that I've been missing. It's a very laid back beat but definitely "in your face" and quality at the same time, with lots of diff. sounds going on in the mix. Short raps at his, well, normal pace, and he sounds just as good as he did back in the day. The chorus is done by a female - "Short Dogg, he came to play the game, so what'chall wanna do, he'll make you say his name!" Tight start to the CD.
2. Get That Cheese (8.0 / 10)
A harder beat kicks in quickly and is definitely meant to hit harder than the last. There is a triple "bump" bassline going on every 6 seconds or so and I think they did a good job on making it sound quality. This song is about getting money in various ways, spendin' it and using it to the fullest. "While youre bumpin in your cadillac sippin on your cognac, Get that cheese". This song features Roger Troutman Jr. on the chorus - Another sicc one.
3. That's Right (7.0 / 10)
Light feelin' about again. Hits hard but Im talkin about the general feeling - Its Light hearted and positive sounding. Straight Too Short beat, you know? Anyway he switches off on a lot of topics on this song and talks about whats good - whats right. He asks "If I went to jail would'a bail me out... ... I wanna know much would'ja give me". etc. Also features Pimpin Ken. Tight song but a little less than the last two.
4. The Old Fashioned Way (7.5 / 10)
A funky beat starts it out and some dude is talkin' about "prostitution" and asking how you'd do it. Short comes in and starts with the pimp talk - the game of ballin' and pimping women and how theyre, well, totally related. "Dont start bitchin about Too Short, why the fuck would I want to listen to you for?" reinforcing the fact that he IS the pimp. Good one..
5. Quit Hatin' Pt. 1 (9.0 / 10)
First part of this hard hitting bassline beat song. The first part features Twista and Lil Jon with a bit of V-White at the end. The chorus is dude yellin about people need to "QUIT HATIN!". Twista comes in first and rips the verse up with the quickness that he has. Comes tight as fuck. Short dog is on the 2nd verse and comes tight with his flows. I swear he sounds better than he did in Cat. Then Jon cines in and .. done. Tight.
6. Quit Hatin' Pt. 2 (7.5 / 10)
Petey Pablo does the chorus for this one. It has the same chorus as last song and a similar beat (but different). The beat is kinda wack, it's not very good... I think they should have spaced these two songs out because it sounds repetitive being right next to each other. Pimp C is featured in this one as well as Lil Jon again, and of course, Pablo. I think this song is about equal heat to the First one above, although Twista did rip it up in Pt. 1. A couple points less.
7. Lollypops (6.0 / 10)
More laid back than usual. Way way more laid back. The beat and vocals are extra slow and its a very mysterious sounding song. Short comes in and starts the talk about fuckin' which stays for the rest of the song. He sounds kinda weird with the tones/pitch he makes with his voice - high lower low higher, etc, Im not feelin' it too much. The chorus is done by a woman and its alright. Coulda done better.
8. Female Players (7.5 / 10)
A little harder of a beat kicks in with a woman singing, and you can hear some drums going on in the back which adds to the song and is pretty cool I think. The song is about exactly what its called, woman playas.. Short raps about em and what theyre all about. Not a bad cut.
9. Cali-O (10/10)
BEST SONG ON THE CD. Possibly one of the best rap songs of the year! This shit is the fucking knock! A tight beat with so much shit going on, AND it features E-40, B-Legit, and Ant Banks. Straight heat. It's about California and all the positive aspects of it (the best state). 40's verse is sicc as fuck and he comes with humorous soundin' lyrics. B-Legit is his hard self as usual, and im feeling Ant Banks's verse too. The chorus is perfection, too. Bump Bump Bump it loud.
10. Pimp Life (9.5 / 10)
A funky and hard beat kicks in. Too Short - "I chose to live this life.", talkin' about Pimp Life obviously. The first verse is done by none other than Devin the Dude who comes tight and funny as fuck. Slow paced lyrics mix with the beat perfectly. Bun B comes in 2nd and has a very deep voice - I like his verse. Shorty comes back in and explains "what he has" which is booty calls, menage-a-trois, etc. Big Gip is the last verse and is the first time I've heard him. He has a cool spit with some pretty good flows. Feeling this heat fully.
11. Call It Gangster (9.0 / 10)
Petey Pablo is featured along with Dolla Will on the chorus and this song is pretty tight. Pablo is on the first verse and also has some background speak goin' on. This song sort of emulates Track 2, with the Triple-Bump bass hits going on, if you know what I mean. Short comes in next and comes hard as usual. The last verse done by Will isn't quite as sick as the other two but he still has some good shit. Yeeeeahhh.... slump it.
12. Set Up (9.5 / 10)
Too Short comes in instantly. "First we got the crack, then we got the gats, then they changed all the laws - It was a Set up." Short is rappin' about the law planning and executing the plan to get people in the hood shot up and arrested and shit. He comes with raw flows instantly, with a sort of quick beat. This is the quickest pace that Short raps on the CD I think. He talks about choosin' your destiny, doin' what you want, until you get hit... HEAT!
13. She Loves Her (7.5 / 10)
LOL! Such a Too $hort kind of track. Just look at the title. Short talks about girls on girls, lesbians fucking with strap ons, etc. Its a very laid back beat with high toned instruments and sounds. "She Loves her.. shes lovin her... I know you lovin her.." the chorus sounds like Short just talkin' as he's watching the shit going on. Cool track.
14. The Movie (6.5 / 10)
The final track on the CD - features George Clinton and Belita Woods. George starts talkin' at the beginning and does the first weird ass verse. Actually it's not a verse, just a stance before the first verse. Can barely even make out what hes saying, but its kinda cool sounding. To me it sounded like some Mary Gray shit for a sec when Woods (the female) comes in, lol! Short comes in though and it gets heated. The piano adds to the beat and this track is a pretty good finisher although Woods sounds a little weird. Average..
OVERALL RATING: 84
This CD is heat. To those who thought Too Short may have been getting old and falling off, including me, this CD shows that the exact opposite is true. I believe he has many more years in him after hearing hard hitting tracks like Cali-O and Set Up. The beats on this are top notch and not generic crap like we have been hearing in music recently. The featured artists are great with names like E-40, Petey Pablo, B-Legit, And Twista in the mix. It's great to see such a quality CD released by the king of pimpin'. I know many people doubted this to be a slumper after the past few albums Short has put out. Chase The Cat was pretty good, but this is better in almost every way. Buy it if you are a bay area rap fan!
