-PORTLAND -- If you're planning a night out in downtown Portland this weekend, be prepared for a heavy police presence. After five shootings already this summer -- two of them deadly -- Mayor Tom Potter and Police Chief Derrick Foxworth are cracking down with an effort called "Operation Safe Streets."

In addition to the added police force, some bars and clubs may change the music they play or even close down early. Some feel it's too much for the mayor to ask.

Potter has asked club and bar owners to help curb the violence by avoiding music that might attract gangs, and even closing doors early. Anthony Smith, a downtown event promoter, says it's a cop out.

"If I listen to a gangster rap song, I'm not going to go downt he street and become a gangster," he said. "We take one specific act or one specific kind of music and slap on it."

Bar and club owners don't want to lose business, but agree that an effort does need to be made against all this violence.-

i think its a bullshit attempt at tryin to gain popularity as a new mayor...

first off, theres been WAY more then five shootings/killings-injuries this summer in my neighborhood, let alone the the rest of the black community, and the rest of the city for that matter, but theres been little or no action to try to curb the "violence".. all them faggots do is put the mobile precinct across the street from my house from like 9am to 3pm, then they leave?? most of the shit goes down well after 3 pm any fuckin way...

and second, how the fuck is closin the clubs downtown gonna help anything... all its gonna do is push the shit back into the hood, or to other clubs throughout the city... then what will he do?? ban all black/black-orentated clubs/music in oregon??

is it just me or does this seem like more fule to add to the whitewash-portland fire?? i mean, theres only been FIVE shootings downtown, with 2 people gettin killed, and like 5 or 6 more being injured this whole summer...

that aint shit...

compare that to shooting almost nightly here... why isnt there any action being taken on this side??

OH I FORGOT... if its downtown, its more important than the rest of the city right??

fuck tom potter and the ppd....

like mayors for as long as i can remember try to make portland viewed as a "peaceful, city with a small town feel" and do whatever it takes to promote portland to yuppies, most people in the around the country either don't know the city exists ,if they do they don't think that any black people or urban culture exist, people think we just a bunch of hippies, rednecks, and yuppies which i do admit portland does have a lot of but that because of the system, That why we need the hip hop scene to blow up, thats why we need more movies filmed here showing downtown and the urban side. Alls we have had really is that wack movie the hunted and it showed downtown but it show mostly water front and all the hippies, it like this dude from new york told me he thought portland was just some small town until he saw that movie and saw it was a big city, and the only reason the city allowed that is because it was on some forest wilderness shit.

This shit is about doing just that trying to destoy the hip hop community that is finally starting to grow in portland,i remember when the only radio station that played any hip hop was z100 and it would be mixed it with that backstreetboy shit, so jammin 95.5 is a step in the right direction but look at the some of the cornballs they got workin up there. It time to push the grind that much harder and put our shit out there.

That's correct... I'm not saying I take that view, but that's how your mayor sure is. He has to make the downtown part of the city as safe as possible otherwise the city will lose money from all the lost business transactions. If people don't feel safe they won't spend a night out on the town. That's the bottom line. As for the rest of the article... No night club is playing any "gangster" rap, they're using the same fucking playlist that the local rap station uses... Which is commercial bitch music. Fuck all these politicians, they ain't helping NOBODY out but THEMSELVES.

well its commercial shit but there's stil sexual overtones and still hard lyrics being said here and there in the pop rap. so they'll flex the excuse of what is inappropiate music.

there's been at least 7-10 murders in 4 weeks in toronto and they haven't said some crazy shit like this, well sorta did mention how youngsters are way into 'violent rap' but i can understand that.

Yep pretty much the whole NW hip-hop scene faces that dilemma, to the entire rest of the country (and to many people who do live in the NW), there are no black people here . And statistically, they're supported in making that claim. This is hands down the toughest region in the country to blow up out of when it comes to rap music.
