WOODLAND, CA - A Woodland traffic stop on suspicion of speeding led to drug enforcement officers seizing more than 70 kilos of cocaine Monday.
The bust began when a California Highway Patrol officer from the Woodland office stopped a 2004 Ford Expedition clocked at traveling more than 90 miles per hour on northbound Interstate 5, said William Olson with the Yolo Narcotic Enforcement Team. When the driver, identified as Lucretia Iris James, 32, of Washington wasn't able to answer some routine questions, Olsen said the officer became suspicious.
At that point, the officer deployed his service dog trained in narcotics detection. The dog alerted the officer to the Expedition's backseat where there were multiple packages of white powder which appeared to be cocaine, said Olson.
The officer arrested James and seized the SUV, transporting it the Woodland CHP office. The Yolo drug enforcement team was notified and processed the cocaine. Olson said 71 bricks of cocaine were recovered, weighing about 2.2 pounds each.
James is facing cocaine possession and transportation charges. She was booked into Yolo County Jail on $850,000 bail.
Olson said the street value of the cocaine is approximately $5.8 million
