Pelosi: Selective Service Idea Not On Agenda

WASHINGTON -- New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel continued on Monday to press his argument that the military draft should be reinstated.
Rangel touched off a firestorm Sunday when he said the Bush administration would never have ordered the invasion of Iraq if the military was staffed through the draft.

The war in Iraq never would have occurred if "members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," he said.

The congressman insisted that his push for reviving a military draft wasn't just a political pot stirrer. He told an audience at Baruch College that his primary objective in calling for the draft was to ask frank questions about the basis and objective of the war.

Rangel said he will introduce a bill next year requiring Americans to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18.

He also wants to hold hearings about troop levels and future plans for Iraq and other potential conflict regions, he said.

The military drafted men during the Civil War, both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. The Selective Service System keeps an updated registry of men age 18-to-25. There are now about 16 million in that group.

Rangel has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families. He unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on the draft in the past. In 2003, his measure was defeated 402-to-2 in the House.

I'm in the military and I agree with the statement that most of the people in here are from low-income families.

I never thought about the draft in that light. But c'mon do you really think rich kids parents are gonna let them go to war anyway, even if there is a draft? Money talks even in here. Don't get it twisted.

I'll say this again, I've been to Iraq. I've lost friends there. That place fucked me up in the head. That place has fucked up a lot of my friends in the head. I had no problem goin there because I figured I can't say shit til I see it for myself. I've seen it and it's not good. When 90% of the soldiers don't wanna be there you start thinkin maybe someone is fuckin up someplace else.

We're all pawns in a rich man's game on both sides. When you start feelin like you have to fight because you are forced too and not because you are willin too it's time to reevaluate why you wanted to fight in the first place.

The days of Braveheart are gone my friends. And you wanna know why. Cuz our William Wallace can't figure out what it is that enslaved his people. War is fought differently nowadays. Our true enemy learned how to hide itself and our enemy within we refuse to confront. You have to learn how to fight that first.

Money is not the root of all evil. It is what we do with it, and what we do to attain it that makes it good or evil. All the Robin Hoods are dead too cuz they spend all there time robbin the Sherwood Forest and not the selfish King. Cuz the whole damn forest has become infested with pride and desperation.

Don't ever holler One Love unless you know what the fuck it means. Teach don't decieve. Seek Truth and it will not only set you free... it will set us all free.

it was a nice thought though. let all these rich war supporters send their own to fight their war. In fact, there should be a law where they draft at least one person from the families of the people who vote for the war in the first place.

Democrats don't want to bring a draft proposal forward at a time like this. Best bet is on Charlie using his sway to get other things done in trade for not bringing this up for a vote. He's a powerful democrat chairing a powerful committee.

Believing there will be a draft for the Iraq war is silly.

Now if another 9-11 type event happens all bets are off.

I just got a letter in the mail saying this:

Dear Mr. Noriega
The Selective Service System has received the registration form you recently submitted. Your decision to comply with the registration requiremen prior to your 18th birthday is commendable. Your form will be temporarily held then processed and then processed during the 30 days prior to your 18th birthday.
After your registration form is processes, we will mail to you an Acknowledgment that contains your assigned Selective Service Number and formally documents that you have registered.
We suggest that you retain this card to verify that you have submitted your registration form to Selective Service.

_________--
I don't remember registering for shit. What the hell are the talking about?

Long and thoughtful response, thanks for sharing that with us. I have a question that I've been wondering for a long time, you're more equipped to answer it than anybody else on here:

Within the military, is political affiliation / opinion on the war about RACE and not CLASS???

The reason I ask is that from some people I've known, some data and simply my perceptions, in the US military the white soldiers tend to be from small towns or blue-collar suburbs, republicans and pro-war. I think you know what I mean, the middle class - lower middle class "flag waiver" types. The black soldiers tend to be from inner-cities or smaller towns in the South, socially conservative but politically maybe more towards the center and left. As for the Latino soldiers, them I don't have a feel for.

The reason I ask this is just b/c of people like XxtraMannish who I think are skewing the facts a little bit to paint the picture they want painted. I am very sure the majority of the people killed over there have been white (which doesn't mean other groups haven't been disproportionately affected b/c I know there are more blacks in the military than the national average), and I'm pretty sure that the white folks over there fighting are republicans and therefore in favor of this war.

Please let me know if this assessment of the connections between race and political affiliation/war beliefs in the military is true. It doesn't mean any belief is right or wrong, I just think people on here oversimplify.

^Your observations are correct. I've noticed that trend also about the black and white soldiers in here.

But if you really want to simplify it, it comes down to almost evrybody up in here has a strong sense of pride be it for their gang, america, family, etc.

And if you already have that crutch (sense of pride) before you even come in here you're more easliy manipulated and controlled.

That's the bad thing about sin. If you are unable to recognize it within yourself you will bow to it everytime and be controlled by it by people who know how to use it and can see it for what it is.

It's not about race or class. All that is is a way to seperate and manipulate birds of a feather. It's like odds and probablities.

The whole world is about what's good and what's bad for all of us as mankind. We can grow together and advance together or we can kill eachother and oppress eachother.

My enemy is sin. That one bad idea. That decision to keep doing bad after I know it is bad. That voice or fist that isn't heard or felt to fight it, though it knows the truth. That bastard or whore who teaches it to my kids. The blind with no understanding or teacher.

I'm not exactly sure how it is in the other branches, but in the Air Force (which I'm in) we have a wide variety of races and classes from all over the Nation. I can't really say that one race is this class or from that part of the country because it is so diverse.
