Just Bought a Microphone...what to do?

i just bought a cheap microphone. i just need it to record audio onto any program on my computer. i plugged it in to the microphone input slot on my computer (next to the speakers one) but when i open the sound recorder and try to use it, nothing happens. is there anything more i need to do or is this microphone a piece of monkey shit?

right now just sound recorder (it in accessories, then entertainment) to test it, but i want to eventually use it with sony acid pro

try going to start, control panel, switch to classic view, sounds and audio devices, go to audio then to sound recording and click on your device and do the same under the tab that says voice

idk that should work thats what i always have to do
