Lacy, Calzaghe Showtime Presser Quotes

JEFF “LEFT HOOK’’ LACY (21-0, 17 KOs): “I’ve had two months of very serious training and dedication. I have had much more intensity in my training for this fight. Every aspect has gone up a level. I am treating this very seriously.’’

When asked why he has abandoned his normally cheerful attitude and adopted one of more disconcert, Lacy replied: “I am a happy guy, still. I am just focused. I am just ready to fight. I am through with all the talk.”

Re: Calzaghe’s injury before the pair’s previously scheduled bout in November: “Joe and all fighters can be prone to injury. This fight is happening on Saturday night, so that’s what I am looking forward to.”

Re: 20,000 UK fans not supporting the American fighter: “I am not worried about it. I’ve always been the underdog, ever since the Olympics (2000). I like it better. That’s why I didn’t mind coming here to take this fight.”

Re: Calzaghe being viewed as the gatekeeper at 168 pounds: “I don’t like that he and his fights control my future. I don’t like that he’s in control. That’s why we are taking this fight here in Manchester.”

GARY SHAW had this to add: “After Saturday night, Jeff is in control of his destiny. We choose when he fights, where he fights and who he fights. The only thing between Jeff and Jeff’s future is sitting on the other side of this dais. This is a case where when you beat the man, you can not only become the man, you surpass the man. Jeff will be the people’s champion.”

JOE CALZAGHE (40-0, 31 KOs)

Q: After 40 fights and 40 wins, why are people calling this a career-defining fight for you?

“This is the first fight were I have something to gain. Jeff is a highly regarded fighter in the U.S. And he’s got something I want, another belt. This is the biggest fight of my career.

“I am a proud fighter. And in this match up, you have the top two guys fighting. I think if you even ask Jeff Lacy, he’ll tell you the same thing, the belts are a bonus for us. It’s the match up that matters the most. After this fight, I’ll still be the best.”

Asked to compare Jeff to other opponents he’s faced, Calzaghe said: “That is difficult to say. We’ve been waiting for this fight for eight years. This is the fight that fighters dream about. I can’t wait for Saturday. I’ve been waiting to unify the titles for eight years.”

Q: Any aspect of Lacy’s style that you need to look out for?

“I am here to do my thing. I have not seen any one thing or another that I need to look out for. I am coming to fight and Jeff won’t have to look for me in the ring. I’ll be there.”

America’s No. 1 Boxing Network, SHOWTIME continues its 20th anniversary celebration of putting on world-class, great fights on Saturday, March 4, when talented, undefeated, hard-hitting super middleweight world champions Jeff “Left Hook’’ Lacy (International Boxing Federation) and Joe Calzaghe (World Boxing Organization) collide in the main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. I was actually going to post this today. This is a fight I've been waiting for, for some time now. I've been wanting to see how good Calzaghe actually was and that was back when Lacy was in the Olympics. Lacy's a beast though I'd have to go with Lacy within 8.

Weigh in photos.

I'm glad I get my bets in early.

I have Lacy at -130, and now it is up to Lacy at -170!
That is a lot of faith in Lacy right there, for a 40 point jump in a month.

I won't even be watching the fight, I will be watching another show.

Calzaghe's been over looked his entire career (partly because he never fights outside of the UK), I hope this fights finally solidifies him as one of the best
P4P fighters in the world.

He just made me $200 richer.
I like Lacy but he was not only too green for Calzaghe, but watching his last few fights led me to believe he wouldn't keep up with Joe's pace.
Calzaghe's power is very underrated and it was his power that set the stage in the very first round when it appeared he hurt Lacy.

Man it's tough taking a far @$$ over seas fight like that.
I mean if one of my favorite fighters in Juan Manuel Marquez struggled fighting in the jungles of South East Asia against Chris John,
you knew Lacy would have a tough time with a good a fighter like Calzaghe.

After 8 years of being the top dog, what's next for Calzaghe?
I'll put my money where my mouth is and say that Joe will beat the winner out Winky Wright VS Jermain Taylor easily.
How about taking on the winner between B-Hop and Tarver?
I'm picking Tarver to beat B-Hop by the way, he's just way too big for the executioner. Calzaghe versus Tarver would be a great fight.
Would Tarver be able to match Calzaghe punch for punch? Would Calzaghe be able to handle Tarver's power?
I'm leaning towards Tarver right now, but that can change....

That was one of the most one-sided world title bouts I've ever seen. Was Lacy really that bad or was Calzaghe that good? Either way, it was a total shutout. Lacy got schooled.

I'm a big Lacy fan but they put him in way too tough here. Lacy is a physical brute but he's still green behind the ears and appallingly one dimensional and he went up against the longest reigning champion in boxing. Lacy would have benefitted from a few more fights against stiffer competition. Hell, Lacy also would have been better off coming in with a plan B. As soon as he realized Calzaghe wasn't gonna fold from his pressure he was dead in the water.

He sure proved he has guts and a sturdy chin though, and he took his ass whuppin' like a man.

He needs some new trainers (or at least some new training methods) and a couple more years experience against top ten material and he'll be fine. He has all the physical tools he's just too one dimensional to beat the very best any way other than landing a clean knockout shot.

Did anyone see the Cotto fight? I missed it.
