There seems to be a general consensus the "The West Coast has fallen." I tend to disagree with this statement, and looking back in rap music, its funny what I tend to remember.
1988-1992- I remember NWA, Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ren, etc. I don't remember Schooly D or the other Eastcoast rappers who tried to replicate the sound. I also don't remember all the Eastcoast "feel good" rappers.
1992-1997- I remember Deathrow Records. I remember 2pac and Snoop and Dr. Dre. I remember Doggystyle, Murder Was the Case, All Eyes on Me, The Chronic, Makaveli. I remember 40 and Short and BLegit. I remember "Game Reconize Game" and "Bounce 2 This," and "Freaks of the Industry." I remember Nas and other groups like Naughty By Nature, but I also remember that a lot of the eastcoast music that made is was very catchy and contemporary and doesnt get much play today on radio airwaves etc.
1998-2002- I remember Dr. Dre producing all the hottest shit that came out. I remember The Streetz is a Motha, I remember Xzibit dropping one of the hottest cds in years. I remember Short going platinum a few more times even though his music wasnt nearly as groundbreaking as his first shit. I remember Eminem, he wasnt from the West, but he made it big with Dre behind the boards. I remember 40 droppin a few tight records. I dont remember any of that down south "bounce" shit that was so popular like CMR and No Limit, whose camps both virtually dissapeared from the rap scene today.
I dont know. These probly arent in depth enough, but what I saying is I notice when I throw in old cds, they tend to be West coast artists. Even if another region dominated that rap scene during the time, their music doesnt surpass the test of time. It tends to get left on the shelf, no matter how good it was when it first came out, right next to the cds that I dont play because they suck. Anyone feel the same way?
