Spike Lee’s name is synonymous with history. The Brooklyn, NY-bred director follows in a proud lineage of African-American filmmakers that includes Oscar Micheaux, Gordon Parks, Melvin Van Peebles, Ossie Davis and Michael Schultz. With this year marking the 20th anniversary of his 40 Acres and a Mule production company, Lee is as busy as ever. In addition to being a part-time professor at New York University, he’s got a commemorative Mars Blackmon edition Air Jordan campaign on the way and a double-CD of his famous film scores dropping on Def Jam. Despite his many accomplishments, which include writing and directing more than 20 feature films and documentaries, the 48-year-old still has to cajole White Hollywood into funding his projects and allowing him to direct scripts he hasn’t penned.
