In your opinion, what does it take for a no-name artist or group to stand out with their debut album?

Do featured artists help?

What about the content and theme of tracks in the album?

In your opinion what artists have made the biggest impression on you with their first album, and why?

Any help is appreciated,
Miggidy

For me, ill ass lyrics are needed for a "no namer" to stand out. Anybody can get dope beats and features if their budget is healthy, but face it, not everyone can rip it on the mic.

beats are a definite must. I like khayree type beats, with breakdowns and live instruments. I like when producers try to impliment other types of music into their beats. Samples are ok to an extent, as long as the new version stands alone.

A good feature or two is great, but i can't stand albums where there are features on almost every track. Maybe getting some vocalists to lay down some choruses...but not some semi-famous rapper laying down half-ass lyrics so you get to put "FEATURING ________" on the cover.

Other than that, write from the heart. Try to avoid being simplistic, without being overly complex. I can't stand it when it's obvious that a rapper's trying way too hard. Write from the heart, dont rap bout shit that you cant back up....good luck bro

First and foremost....the artist better have talent....in other words, they gotta have skills...being versatile helps too...opens u up to a wider range audience....if you got the talent...then would be money...money to promote ur artist....radio, video, ads, etc....sometimes if ur really talented you don't even need big name guests on ur tracks...but it does help for ur first release....good beats too....a good producer...and when u get ready to press make sure the album sounds proper...quality shit...not no bammer hissing or low ass garbled sound....when ppl buy cd's they want quality..not quantity....make sure every track u do u put in a 110%....with the stream of garbage vs the good shit coming out...a solo not known artist is gonna have a harder time getting the masses to listen....so don't put out half ass shit...and keep promoting..make connections...network with other people...help each other out..so you both can eat....if you have good relations with media, djs, labels, etc....people are more likely going to want to help you....anyways, I might have got off track here..sorry....good luck with whatever project you got brewing.

everything has to be on point, everything~!
the production
the mastering and mixing
the lyrics
and charisma and cadence.

I used to cop albums when the I saw a gang of features on there that made me want to listen to it, but with the state of bay area rap right now, that ain't gonna make me buy shit

the best suggestion I have is this, press up more than 1000 copies miggs, and give cd's away if you have to (if you can afford it) and the word of mouth will pick you up.
I myself am a hard person to impress as of late as far as the music goes. People are almost pissing me off with the bullshit they been puttin out, but if I hear nothing but good shit about it, there is a far greater chance of me pickin up the cd.....but you gonna send me one for free anyways right? lol stay up

I hate to say it but for me its the features that make me actually buy the album, but its the album as a whole that makes me a fan!!

for instance: when i bought A-wax "savage timez" i had never heard him or heard of him but i seen he had mob figz, Kunyva, young Al & woodie on there so i copped it.... now i am a huge fan of his music!

Everytime I get a little soft on game I read shit like this and remember I have to put out top quality especially since its going to be my first album. Yea Hoggalypse you get a free copy but if you like it you gotta send the skril cause buddy I NEED it.

Great feedback people!

I had already picked up on some of this stuff, top notch lyrics and beats, orginality ect.
But it's always nice to hear people express their ideas.
There's so much to be learned

@ Virgin,
I'm basically asking what makes the listenner a fan of a new artist or group.
