@EDJ its different from panning. When you pan you are actually REDUCING the signal/volume/power of the opposite side. You wont get the holophonic sound effect on conventional systems and earphones work well because of the way earphones transmit sound to the ear (different from speakers.)

EDIT: I would take 5.1 or 7.1 over this.

I would prefer surround because the sound actually DOES come from the speakers. Holophonic sounds are basically recorded and manipulated sounds.

^Pro tools HD on a D-command, and the speakers were JBL or Genelec. Personally I don't see the use of mixing a lot of albums in 5.1 or 7.1 format because most people are not capable of properly playing it back.

For Dvd video you can go 5.1 @96k and have the audio downmix (NOT mixdown) to stereo to playback on conventional systems.
