@EDJ its different from panning. When you pan you are actually REDUCING the signal/volume/power of the opposite side. You wont get the holophonic sound effect on conventional systems and earphones work well because of the way earphones transmit sound to the ear (different from speakers.)

EDIT: I would take 5.1 or 7.1 over this.

that shit IS nuts...doesn't even seem like it's coming from the headphones, like it's really there. can't wait until movies start to incorporate this shit. surround sound doesn't go up and down like that shit!!

For dvd audio, Personally I don't see the use of mixing a lot of albums in 5.1 or 7.1 format because most people are not capable of properly playing it back.

For Dvd video you can go 5.1 @96k and have the audio downmix (NOT mixdown) to stereo to playback on conventional systems.
