WHEATON, Ill. -- A dad who volunteered with a youth hockey team has been convicted of misdemeanor battery for sticking a 13-year-old's head in a locker room toilet.
The incident happened last year at the Seven Bridges Ice Arena in the Chicago suburb of Woodridge after the player was whistled for a penalty.
A DuPage County judge on Thursday sentenced 48-year-old Raymond O'Donnell to one year of court supervision and ordered him to perform three days of community service.
DuPage County prosecutor Joseph Birkett says O'Donnell's actions amounted to abuse and no child should be "subjected to that type of ridicule."
But defense attorney Terry Ekl calls it a harmless incident and says O'Donnell put the teen's head in the toilet to prevent him from being given a rougher "swirly" by his teammates.
