If you don't need a mixer, don't get one. It would be an unnecessary expense. Honestly man, I would keep that $500-$700 you have until you've got atleast $1000 to work with because if you're looking for quality and all you have is $500-$700, it ain't gonna happen if you need a soundcard, mic and preamp (what about a compressor?). Don't let anyone tell you any different either. Well...that is unless you don't really care what the results sound like. But in my opinion, if you're gonna do it then do it right. It's better to take your time and get what you really need instead of cutting corners to do it 'right now'. Too many cats settle for mediocre shit today instead of something good tomorrow and you can hear it in the music.

One last thing, and I can't stress it enough.... Do your homework before you start investing your money into gear!!! A lot of cats don't really know what they're talking about but won't hesitate to give you advice and the cats who do know something about it might have a different ear than you do.

yes be very patient, i know it sucks to have that money burning a hole in your pocket but you will be glad when you get the good stuff, i mean there is no sence in going out and spending 700 on something you are gonna want to replace in a year, you want to buy something that you will at least know that even if you have to replace it later on in a few years that it will still come in use at some point. my suggestion is to do your homework like sick said, and after you find what you want then take the money you got and go put it on layaway so that way you arent tempted to spend it and that way you know you got your stuff on hold, and then you just go drop more money on it when you get it.

fasho. thats what im doin right now is my home work...lol... the money aint burnin a hole in my pocket i just needed sumthin for now...like a prefab studio type thing... its gonna get mixed and mastered by brian gardner, and most likely re-layed if i dont like the results. and i only looked into the euro rack because it sounds like a good piece of equipment for a small price... but yeah i do need a mixer right now... i got a triton, m1, mc-505, mpc, a oldschool casio cz1000 (my dads old shit from his "nu shooz" hay day.lol) and just found two mics... i just like haven the freedom of pressin a key on a machine and hearin sound instead of haven to go plug it in errytime...lol...

it matters what kind of quality you want to do...
I've got equipment that costs 300 taht will make my album sound better then 70% of the local releases...but I strive higher then local, so I get myself a Neve Preamp(CACHING!!!!) my quality shoots a lot higher, then i figure out i don't want the 1272 style preamp from Neve, i want the 1073, so i go higher... lol

it's all about what you want...i'm not even gonna be using a compressor for my vocals, i will be using a Levler instead(no invidual controls of ratio or threshhold)

sometimes it's good to hop out the circle, see what you can find...i guarantee you i'm prolly the only cat in the bay recording with a Neve 1272 for rap music...don't mean i'm better, it's just thinkin outside the box...(most cats are using Avalons)

M-Audio's Delta line is great. I would definately recommend the 44/66/1010. For that price range, you're not gonna do better.

Well... I'm gonna go against the grain here since you're original question was about vocal quality... Get yourself the following and you will have EXCELLENT vocal quality...

Rode NT1A Condenser... $199
DBX 286A Pre-Amp... $199
Echo MIA... $150

...and if I were you, I would stay away from that behringer mixer. if you record through it there will be noticable line noise in your tracks. i have the behringer and I only use it for monitoring. when it comes time to record something it's always bypassed.

here is my dream setup for vocal quality...

Microphone: Neumann u87ai...
Pre-Amp: Avalon Design AD2022...
Equalizer: Avalon Design AD2055...
Compressor: Avalon Design AD2044...

Would any of you guys recommend him the DigiDesign M-Box? It comes bundled with ProTools Software, and you are able to use all the plugins with it. Costs like 450$ has mic pre's built in (Yeah I know They aren't that good buy they'll work). Then you'll be able to spend a lil more on your mic. I'm wondering if anyone has worked with this setup, cuz I own a DigiDesign 001 and I love that system especially since I just got some new plug ins. I do need a Mic pre tho. What up wit it?
