Because of his icon status. He is a contributer, but only playing 1/2 of the game well doesn't make you most valuable unless you're breaking some sort of record above and beyond.

^^How does it not make u most valuable? i mean, im not necessarily a big DH fan, but if ur winning games for the sox like he did, then i would consider that pretty valuable. its not like great fielders are ever considered for the mvp.

DH's can't be MVP. It's not like he's hitting 80 homers with 214 RBI's or nothing.
They SHOULD be able to win MVP awards, but they won't anytime soon.

I think Ortiz should have won it over A-Rod cuz he was more valuable to the Sox than A-Rod was to the Yankees... DH's shouldn't be penalized for not playing the field... It's a rule.

I never said it was a rule, it just won't happen until they do something outstanding. MLB MVP is also not relevant to their particular team, it's all around best player of the entire league. You're going to tell me that Ortiz and Thomas are more valuable than a player like Ryan Howard who has more HR's and RBI's than either of those two and played in 159 games of both offense and defense!? Ortiz only fielded like 10 games this season, he's only playing 50% of the game of baseball.

^^^im not saying a player like howard is more valuable or not, im just saying that ortiz, despite a dh, is quite valuable to how the red sox did.
Aren't we talking about league MVP and not team MVP? Because even the Royals and Cubs will call someone there team MVP.

i see what ur saying, but what im saying is, if the red sox had finish better and were in the playoffs, he would be a serious mvp candidate.
