A 61-year-old former bank executive who struck a blind pedestrian three times with his car while driving drunk on Feb. 7 has pleaded guilty to his crimes and agreed to a nearly 2-year prison sentence.
Jack Alvord pleaded guilty this morning to drunken driving, third-degree assault and reckless driving in Multnomah County Circuit Court. He also pleaded no contest to hit-and-run driving for speeding off after pinning 51-year-old Norman Larkin, who had been standing at the corner of Northeast 57th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard with his white cane in hand, against a utility pole. Witnesses chased Alvord for nine blocks before boxing him in with their cars in the 6200 block of Northeast Sacramento Street.
Alvord's blood alcohol content was 0.30 percent, approaching four times the legal limit.
Alvord is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 10, but he has preliminarily agreed to 22 months in prison, three years of post-prison supervision and a five-year revocation of his driver's license. That starts the day he is sentenced.
Deputy district attorney Chuck Sparks said Alvord has already agreed to pay Larkin $1.25 million to settle a civil claim, and Sparks took that into account before signing off on the plea deal.
Larkin was hospitalized for 12 days, underwent several surgeries and suffered internal injuries. His pelvis was broken in six places and his left leg in two. It's unclear exactly how Larkin is recovering now, but he is expected to be at the sentencing hearing next month.
ive known him since i was like 9 years old, coached me and my brothers baseball team. crazy cuz he was a good guy. straight edge, sons played baseball with us. was president of a bank.
now all that shit is gone. It was all over the news when it happened in Feb. and the other day I happened to drive by his house and saw him outside with his wife and grandson. I thought, damn, i thought he would still be in jail. and then this was in the paper. got sentenced the next day that i saw him to 2 years and have to pay over a million to dude he hit. crazy. dude was feelin it for sure.
