STATEMENT BY BAY AREA NOT IN OUR NAME PROJECT
Not in Our Name Bay Area protests FCC attack on San Francisco Liberation Radio 93.7 FM
July 20, 2003
In the wake of recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deregulations that will create an even more homogenous, corporate-controlled media monopoly, federal agents delivered a "notice of illegal broadcasting" to our all-volunteer community-based 100 watt micro-radio station on July 2. FCC agents were denied entry into the station even after threatening fines of $17,000 and jail.
San Francisco Liberation Radio 93.7 FM (SFLR) began broadcasting over ten years ago in response to the mainstream media's censorship of dissent during the 1991 Gulf War. Since then, SFLR has based their authority to broadcast on "the right to freely speak and the rights of individuals to have access to a free and diverse media." SFLR broadcasts 4pm-11pm everyday and can be heard in eastern parts of San Francisco and western Berkeley and Oakland.
SFLR has played an important role in opposition to the ongoing "war without end." SFLR DJ's welcomed Not in Our Name activists onto the airwaves and promoted the first nationwide protests against war on Iraq on October 6 last year. SFLR contributed to the publication of "Our Grief is Not a Cry for War" ads during the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and has co-sponsored numerous Not in Our Name initiated ads since. SFLR continues to give voice to those opposed to the ongoing occupation of Iraq. SFLR nightly news regularly covers the rise of police state restrictions, and the detentions, special registrations, and roundups of immigrants here in the United States.
The Bay Area cannot afford to lose this vital voice of resistance - not to mention eclectic music and musings. Support and defend SFLR against FCC attack!
SFLR is currently asking San Francisco residents to urge their city supervisors to approve the recently introduced resolution in support of SFLR (http://indybay.org/news/2003/07/1628906.php).
