Faking post edits?

I always see people write something, then towards the end they type edit: and say something like I just realized this or something. But there are no edit time stamps. Are people faking on their editing of posts? Is it too hard to use the backspace key? You didn't submit your post and it's not like you carved it into stone. Why fake an edit?
