It's like this.

For torrents, just check out the tracker sites such as mininova.org or torrentspy.com and use a torrent client such as:
Azureus:

For singles / older music I'll use eMule. It's one of the faster P2Ps of its kind and it's got a whole lot of things to download from.

Now there's a couple of others which are good, such as SoulSeek and Direct Connect. Both have good public hubs, but it's great when you have a private network of people working with each other.

Then there's IRC so of course just use something like mIRC and search sites such as packetnews.com for releases:

For all the old school nerds out there, I'm sure you've been using NewsGroups for many years. Still one of the best places to get releases and quick as hell since it's normally hosted on your ISPs servers. It scares noobs away because there's so much text :p

Now with all P2P software, there are people looking to bust you. So get something like PeerGuardian which blocks a huge range of IPs known to belong to those said people, and somemore on top of that.
